But has he won them because he has recruited great players. Or because he's a great X & O

Why can't it be a combination of both? Yes he gets out coached from time to time, but so do all coaches, even great coaches. Why are people so threatened by the man that they disparage his coaching ability and say he only wins because he recruits better than everyone else?

If you have to ask the question.

Yeah, everybody who knows anything about Xs and Os is always talking about how average he is with it.

No one mentions the Process. Motivation/drive is a HUGE part of football coaching. When a team has a coach that instills drive and heart, they can beat a team with superior talent and schemes. I've seen it a hundred times. That's why these hardnosed SOB's are drawn to football and fit the profile of most of the best coaches. Endurance, drive and mental toughness have somehow become underrated when they've always been the essence of football

When you're the best at that basic aspect - getting your guys to play hard - and you're the best at recruiting and you have guys who can scheme with the best of them, well that's when you have the greatest dynasty ever.

Recruiting, establishing gameday routines, developing talent, hiring the coaches that are best for the job and many other things are just as if not more important than the Xs and Os. Even if we were to assume that he's a mediocre Xs and Os coach he's clearly demonstrated that he's the best at everything else.

I think 2009 will forever be my favorite team. So many great personalities and memorable players and they went undefeated through sheer will (see UT and Auburn). Plus it was our first Natty since I was 6, so yeah

Evidence?

Average at Michigan State. Bad in the NFL. Other than 2003 and an upset in the SECCG in 01 he was average at LSU. In 2007 he sucked at Bama, then he got his first #1 recruiting class all thanks to the media hype from when he was hired

Yea, just throw out the random national championship and the 10-3 SECCG winning, Sugar Bowl winning season (40% of his tenure there). They don't count.

Yep, all you need is hype to land one of the 2-3 best recruiting classes of the last 30 years. He then went 12-2 with all those guys as true freshmen and 13-0 with a national title with all of them as sophomores with the bulk of the team being old Shula guys who were 3-star talents half of which didn't get drafted. What a hack.

Wow. C'mon man. You can argue about whether or not he is great at certain aspects of coaching, but look at the overall results. Yes Saban is a great coach.

Top 3 in the SEC in the last 50 years, and arguably #1.

The only thing that makes a great coach is producing wins and championships.

Who cares if some coach is an Xs and Os genius if his team loses.

Xs and Os are just one of the many, many factors that go into being a great coach.

Wins and championships are the ultimate goal. If you produce those, you're a great coach.

False. He turned them around from a dumpster fire, which is why LSU snatched him up.

Bad in the NFL.
False. He improved the Dolphins in year one, slid a little in year two but may have had his foot out the door. See Pete Carroll and Bill Belichick's first two NFL seasons for reference.

False. He turned around LSU from mediocrity to win SEC titles and Natties, and raised their expectations permanently. He literally made LSU an elite program.

Most coaches suck in a first rebuilding year implementing their system. Bear Bryant lost his first years at A&M (winless) and Bama (only losing season). Lou Holtz went winless his first season with SCar then had back-to-back 8-4 seasons. There are tons of examples. That's the norm for a rebuilding coach.

Shula was a decent recruiter and had top 5 classes.

According to LSU fans he is the greatest X's and O's coach of all time, simply because his players are bust once they leave his system and join the NFL.
