You're right. Most people in the US don't know where Auburn is unless they follow the sport.

No from what I can tell you have legitimate reasons to root for Michigan and Bama, with actual connections to both.

But many fans don't.

Honestly if would piss me off if I had to deal with a part of the A&M fanbase that were also simultaneously Miami Heat and New York Yankee fans....

Huh, I would have never assumed someone who is an Aggie fan to be a frontrunner.

Lived in Alabama 7 years. Bama fans are worse - an Auburn fan never tried to run me off the road because of my LSU tag.

Exactly. Same thing for Barners I think.

You see this more and more. Bama fans embarrassed and looking down on thier own fans.

IF there is any difference, you dont hear Au fans making these statements.

Barners, outside of their town at least, always have to deal with sidewalk Bama fans that run the state. This makes them a tougher group, less prone to melting and more prideful of what they do have. They are not riding of the success of Auburn. Auburn is something they take heat for, and they don't mind because of pride.

Meanwhile many Gumps are only fans of the team because the success of Bama allows them to feel better about their own crappy life. They ride the biggest bandwagon in the South, so they have INCREDIBLY thin skins and melt all over the place for reasons that make them seem like ingrates to the college football world, like crying because they ONLY won three out of five titles.

There are many sidewalk fanbases like the Gumps in America (Michigan, USC, Texas, etc.), but Bama for some reason attracts the most useless, embarrassing, and stupid people from this sidewalk category.

What is sad is that there are some really good Bama fans. Classy folks that attended the school, go to every game, and appreciate the little things (aka not every year is national title or a complete waste of time). But these classy folks are overpowered by the Wal-Mart legions Bama's success has provided.

So the difference in the fan bases is the size and popularity of both?
