but as an NBA scout put it last night there may not be a coach in CBB right now doing more with less than him right now.

Is basketball hard to coach?

The part when a basketball coach does the most work is between games. Making a gameplan and getting it through to the players with limited amount of time. During the actual game it is mostly just making subs and hoping your players execute the gameplan correctly while you call a few set plays depending on your style of play and you make adjustments to what the other team is doing at halftime.

Plus even if you are bringing in elite talent, but aren't a good sideline coach you will be caught out occasionally.

Johnny Jones and Josh Pastner come to mind.

honestly, do you people even watch basketball? have you never noticed the near constant communication going on between the bench and the floor? in both college and the nba? do you think the coaches are just cheering them on? good lord.

Football is a lot of position coaching and getting it all to work together. In basketball, you have less players on the court, so there aren't quite as many variables.

That being said, coaching basketball is difficult. You have to recognize what your players are doing right and what they're doing wrong. Changing a player's shot technique is difficult-- probably on par with changing a QB's throwing technique (see Tebow). Players have to know how to use their body based on their position, and everyone on the court needs to have a good basketball IQ because everyone touches the ball. A lot of that comes from practice and drills set down by the coach.

Players knowing when to foul, when to slow the pace of quicken the pace comes from coaching.

Past champions have the following: Spurs have the best power forward of all time, a point guard that's one of the best and probably he best all around player in the league.

Spurs are an example of what great coaching and the best management and basketball can produce.

The heat have Lebron, bosh AND D wade

"had" and Spoelstra is a great coach. The Heat are still a playoff team with an old Wade, Bosh and a bunch of role players

Lakers have Kobe, Gasoline and some with Shaq

what have they won without Phil Jackson?

Lakers/Celtics in the 80's had the greatest players and rosters of all time

Yes. Basketball is hard to coach

Players matter obviously and most coaches at the top level are good enough that the players are going to make more of a difference than the coaching

But if you pick a coach that is a clown he can ruin a team or program. Watch LSU with that talent. If they don't make the tourney that's a prime example

Rarely do you see a coach like bo Ryan who consistently out perform his talent and beat other top coaches

You realize you can just reverse it and say that the players made the coach better? Those players and having a guy as respected as those 3 coaches are is kind of what I was getting at. Basketball in a nutshell = give it to your best player. Let him score. We have a 7 footer who is dominant? "Hey you, give the ball to him." Just basic stuff. Maybe I should sub in player X for y, bevayse X looks tired or isn't shooting good. If I was Phil Jackson, I would have kicked my feet up and watched the show.

JVG calls the NBA a players league. I think a good coach can make a great team a champion though. See Mark Jackson and Steve Kerr.

It is easy to be a shitty coach, but hard to be a good one. And if anyone has ever sat next to the bench and listened to some of these coaches during the game.....damn, some of them are some dumb arse mofos. I mean ignorant.

Popovich has won titles in three different decades with all different groups of players.

Phil Jackson won titles with two different franchises and three seperate core groups of players

Pat Riley won titles with the Lakers, brought the Knicks back from the dead, and went to Miami and won a title

Spoelstra was a playoff coach long before he ever had Lebron or Bosh

you stated in your OP you were asking a question and now you're arguing with people telling you that coaching is difficult and matters
