Dude - I grew up in Birmingham and grew up going to Legion Field. We had season tix and I went to every game and some the greatest victories Bama has ever had were at Legion. I was never afraid of the area and knew it like the back of my hand. When I was a kid the AU-UA game was better than the Superbowl and it was the biggest event of the year. There was nothing better than the Iron Bowl when it was in Birmingham. Unless you grew up with it, you wouldn't understand....but I still love the Old Grey Lady even if she is falling apart. Too many great memories.....
Yes from Mobile and I was at Bama in the early 90s. I have many great memories of games at Legion Field. I went to every Iron Bowl from about 87 to 97 but compared to Tuscaloosa it is not even a contest.

I'll say this, a game at Legion Field in the 1970's through mid 80's (and I'm sure in the 1960's) was first rate. This was the big time.In addition to conference games Alabama played Southern Cal twice, Nebraska, Missouri,Notre Dame,Boston College with Flutie and A&M. Auburn's games with Tennessee in the '70's were huge.
And then you throw in Simpson Pepper doing the PA. Good stuff.

I'm from Prattville, graduated from UA in '10, and went to MANY games in Birmingham. I don't miss Legion Field at all. Especially since they improved 82 from Prattville to Tuscaloosa.

Yep - As I said, pre-Saban almost all of Bama's greatest all time wins were at Legion.
Look - I get all of the reasons why the games moved on campus....I remember it all well and know all of the backstories as to the City of Birmingham's issues, Auburn's issues, the mindset of Bama's leadership, and certainly the current state of affairs as it relates to the stadium and surrounding area....blah, blah, blah....
What I am saying if you grew up a Bama fan in Birmingham, Legion Field in its heyday was awesome. To me Legion is akin to Fenway Park, Wrigley, Old Trafford, or any old legendary stadium...obviously it's heyday was a loooong time ago but that is the way I feel about it.
Now cue some jackoff Auburn or Bama fan to tell me what a shithole Legion is today and how much better everything is now.

It was worse in the early 90s.

The stadium was fine at the time. It was just the location.

See, this would be cool as shite to me if Birmingham unimaginably got a respectable stadium that could host at least 1 or 2 Alabama games in a 1-3 year span. Kind of like how Wisconsin is hosting LSU in Green Bay, I would love to have a marquee matchup at the beginning of the season on primetime in Birmingham.
I realize it's a dream, but the old timers I talk to on Gameday say they miss the atmosphere in Legion Field. They leave early, smoke a few joints on the way, get drunk 30 minutes before the game, have a blast, then see what's going on in Birmingham.
Just from my perspective, I would enjoy making the hour drive from T-Town. Instead of purchasing a plane ticket to DFW every year, this would be better. But alas, tis a dream

In 1968 there was a double header with LSU-Alabama at noon and Tennessee-Auburn at night. Just suppose someone waved a wand and the Legion Field area was as nice as one's favorite stadium locale and Legion had 100,000+. Can you imagine those 4 fan bases together at the same time?

Remember when parking was free, but you HAD to pay a fine upstanding young man to "Watch your car".

I grew up in the Tuscaloosa area and agree with this.

quote:No, just a reminder for younger Rantards that Bama didn't play on their own campus throughout most of their glory years from 1930-1999.
You state that likes its some damning statistic.
Another good trivia question: what was the first season in which Bama won more than 4 games in Tuscaloosa on their way to a National Championship?
Answer: 2009.
In fact, 1979 was the only prior NC season where Bama played more than 3 games on campus. Even in '92 they only played in Bryant-Denny three times.

Yeah, I always parked at "Snowball"'s house. Seemed to be a nice enough guy. (By nice enough, I mean he never stole from me).
