I was only 12 or so at the time, so my memory may be fuzzy, but the only Iron Bowl I went to with the 50/50 split was 85 and it seemed pretty even to me. We were supposedly in the Bama section in the end zone, but there seemed to be more Auburn fans around us.

Within fifteen years Huntsville could be the largest city in Alabama.

Huntsville continues to lead the growth in Alabama, according to new Census estimates released today, adding more than 10,000 residents since 2010. That's more than any other city in the state. At the current rate of growth, Huntsville would pass Birmingham as the state's largest city within 15 years.

I went to the Bama MTSU game in 2002. Our only game in Legion that year. By then Legion had become nothing but an annoyance and I was ready to see it gone for good

The stands were always dirty and were also falling apart.
In the mid-80's the bleachers were white fiberglass and there were lots of them that were busted and cracked. I remember they were hot as hell to sit on in those early season games.
It was a dump back then.

I was there as well. My second and final game at Legion Field.

I haven't been to Legion Field since the USF game in 2003. It was pitiful looking then. It's in worse shape now. The City is to blame for letting a historical stadium fall in on itself.
I sat down and watched the movie Woodlawn a couple of months back. Legion Field featured heavily in the game's final scene. It was sad to see it missing an entire upper deck in the film. They could have CG'ed it back on there for accuracy purposes but I guess they didn't have the money for that kind of shot.

It mustve been my last one as well. I don't remember going to USF in 2003

I don't think that is accurate. I think that is a little Auburn revisionist history. It was usually close to 50-50 in the stadium.
50/50 my arse. Ridiculous. I went to several Iron Bowls in Lesion Field and they were always dominated by Bama fans.

Paying one of the local entrepreneurs $20 to be parked-in for 2 hrs. after the game was over

My last game at Legion was in 2000 vs. Southern Miss. We lost. Legion was in bad shape then....but I grew up going to Legion Field and it will always be a special place to me.
As far as Auburn attendance, I recall by the late 80's they represented reasonably well during Dye's heyday......but AU had a beef about playing in Birmingham forever......

Aside from your car being broken in to and then the upper deck collapsing, what's not to love?
They took one upper deck down years ago. The Iron Bowl is expensive enough as it is, with only 70,000 seats (if the seats that are under a tarp all the time are still useable) I don't want to imagine the price.
But hey, as for the surrounding neighborhoods, who wouldn't want a stadium where you can walk across the street and buy some heroin after the game to celebrate your teams win?

This whole practice of playing your home games an hour away seems damn absurd from an outside perspective. It would be as if Kentucky decided to arbitrarily schedule games at Riverfront Stadium or Cardinal Stadium. Doesn't make a lick of damn sense.

2008 was the first time Alabama ever beat Auburn in Tuscaloosa
Prior to that game, in its 100+ seasons as a major collegiate football power, the Tide's combined on-campus win total against its three biggest SEC foes, Auburn, Tennessee and LSU, was 11.
9 vs LSU, 2 vs UT, and 0 vs AU.

It made perfect sense for logistical reasons when the practice started. The larger, and often capital city, of a state was more centrally located and more readily accessible. Of course it made less sense as time went on, but the practice was pretty well set in stone at that point.

You state that likes its some damning statistic.

Legion Field sat more people in those days. 83,000 seats compared to Bryant-Denny's 60,000. It wasn't until 1998 when Bryant-Denny finally had more seats than Legion Field. I don't know how it came to be, but we just always played our big games in Birmingham.

Again it goes back to Denny marketing the program to the whole state. This mindset let to us attracting some fantastic coaches and having a 100 year dynasty

The reason Bama played its biggest games in Birmingham was that at the time Legion was significantly bigger than BDS. All of Bama's major games were played at Legion. Plus it's easier to get in and out of Birmingham than Tuscaloosa. Lastly, Bama played games in Birmingham as it is the the states largest city and economic/power center and Bryant wanted to ensure it was locked down as an Alabama town.

Took my daughter to the Birmingham Bowl this past year. Kinda sad how its so beat up looking now. Park board can't even paint the rows and seats where the numbers are easily identifiable
Surely you don't expect a contractor who was awarded the job to paint, to actually buy the paint. That would mean dipping into kickback money and city cronies won't stand for that.
I "was told a story", by a subcontractor, that when a previous mayor was in office, that he put a bid in for work. He was called in for a meeting with this long time mayor and told to fill out another bid, his other was torn up. He needed to increase the bid by $5,000 and bring that amount to him in cash when he was awarded the work.
