This doesn't mean we love him. Obviously he has dropped quite a few games that we should have won during his career at Tennessee. Last year was a rollercoaster that ended on a mostly down note. We are already paying this guy until something like 2020, so I just hope we can do ok until we work his buyout down a couple million more and then pick up someone with genuine Tennessee connections as our next HC.

Jim Bob Cooter anyone?

Also, Vols fans are very wary of making snap decisions when firing coaches. We have a decade of horrible football to show for our last significant firing.

I completely understand where you're coming from but this is a tough question if you look at all the factors. No one was happy about last season. But last year there were so many other high-profile openings and we didn't have an AD. All that plus the fact that we had 3 coaches in 5 years before him and he's brought us to the highest level we've been in since the late 2000s***. People will also give him a pass because we had like 22 starters on defense this season and some injuries on the offensive side as well (Bama game o-line was composed of backups). We are looking pretty stout on our 2018 recruiting at the moment as well.

Do I want him fired? Yes. But more importantly I want him to be replaced with someone better. Last year with all that going on I doubt that would've happened.

***I i have higher expectations for the Vols than a 9 win season but i try to be realistic.

McElwain should win this game and win rather easily Michigan returns like 8 starters total. They might be the Power 5 team with the least returning starters.

LOL. McElwain doesn't stand a chance in hell.

Fair enough. Y'all weren't the only ones devastated by injuries last year though (and most importantly had your first string QB the whole time).

If McElwain sucks so bad why haven't any of you other teams managed to win the east (looking at you UT,UGA,) the past 2 seasons

Because Georgia has had awful teams in each of the last two seasons

Coach Mac is not getting fired for going 8-4 , he could win the east going 8-4 with losses to Michigan , FSU , Kentucky and another SEC team.

Is this like how the Swamp Kittens were going to blow Florida out in knockoff Death Valley?

That is a loss that barring a great year would put Mac on the hot seat- and not from the current doubters. Old Bull Gators (pre-Spurrier) might be more accepting of losses than the post-1990 folks but 3 straight bad losses to FSU- that's something they won't swallow.

I don't think he's a terrible coach. I think he just needed some experience as the head coach before taking a job at a place like UF. He'll do fine a USC as long as he lets the offense be coached by the O.C.

This, a decade from now Muschamp might be ready for the Florida job he took in 2011. He needed to learn how to let go and not micromanage the Offense.

Yeah, but that is not what you are paying him for.

No idea what Orgeron is going to do as a head coach, maybe you beat them again. If Orgeron can do an average job I think LSU wins.

But they have a more talented team, as will Georgia.

And if you do make it to Atlanta, I personally think you have a very poor chance of beating whoever represents the West.

That's not what you pay a Florida coach to do, especially in year 3. Urban had already notched his first championship, Saban was 12-2 his 2nd year at Alabama, and won it his third year there (and you have zero chance of doing that this year).

Then there is Urban at Ohio State.

Look the players are there around you in Florida. Regardless of whether you win as many championships as Saban has in a similar period of time, Florida expects (with good reason) to be in the national discussion EVERY year. Just like under Spurrier, and under Meyer.

That's what you pay a Florida coach for. You pay them to do it in a hurry. And there is no sign of that happening.

Now someone might trot out Beamer and Virginia Tech. Again, you aren't paying or looking for someone to build a consistent winner. You already have that.

You want someone who does what Saban and Meyer are doing, what Spurrer did (even if he only won one paltry championship in 12 years or so).

And if that's not what you have, you are going to keep looking. Whether you or your fanbase realizes it yet or not.

My take anyway. I wouldn't touch your job with a ten foot pole if I was a coach. I would want to have fun and have a team I was proud of.

Not to feel sick to my stomach that I didn't win it all this past year.

And at your school, frankly there is no other option.

Unless you want to be the perennial underachiever Georgia has been with similar advantages.
