Auburn folks asked that he keep a couple of the assistants since they had enough dirt to burn the place down

Such as the ineluctable fact that Smart basically laughed in Auburn's faces over their offer? If you insist.

highly unlikely any coach would laugh at a multi million dollar offer, whether its accepted or not. Thats just dumb as frick.

I know. My sources are telling me that Kirby called Nick into his office and they put it on speakerphone and snickered while the Auburn representative was making his overture and then hung up when they started to get too loud.

Perhaps... but insofar as this thread is concerned, so are you.

According to Mike Ferrell's (sp?) sources, Kirby had a contract offer and it was thought he would accept. Something happened.

He realized AU is a dead end job.

I like the idea that, when the cameras and microphones are off, Saban and his assistants act like middle school kids.

Kirby had serious interest.

Auburn had serious interest.

Neither agreed to the terms the other put on the table.

Gus was hired instead.

Glad we cleared this up for AUtigerNOLA and Sandman.

Auburn turned Kirby down. There were some demands he wanted met and he wasn't worth it to Auburn, so they didn't meet them.

I think the Scarbo article that was just released stated pretty much exactly what I wrote yesterday afternoon and was told I was full of shite on.

There was heavy mutual interest, but neither party would agree on the terms. Kirby wanted things that Auburn wouldn't grant. Mutual interest, and mutual separation. They turned each other down.

No problem... This is what you told me about that yesterday:

Biggest load of bull shite. You people are dumb as frick and believe anything that's posted on a message board.

And this is what blzr said:

I expect that the search committee liked both Smart and Malzahn and the tie breaker for Gus was their familiarity with him. Kirby probably didn't get offered.
