There wouldn't be a link, because a story never broke because a deal was never reached. That's the way negotiations work.
Go read AuburnUndercover threads started from about 7AM to 12pm today. Everyone and their brother (and even some women) were saying that it would be Kirby, that a deal was being reached.
"Official offers" don't happen unless they know the candidate will accept the offer. But they certainly do negotiate under terms of "Here's what we would be willing to do... how does that sound?"

What happened to Jeff Fisher? The Auburn boards I read said that he was leaving the Rams to be the Auburn coach but only if his GM came with him to the AD. What about Chris Peterson? Gary Patterson? Jim Mora Jr? Kirby Smart? I guess all those coaches turned you down.

Pretending his interest in the job wasn't reciprocated by Auburn is a bit silly. I think it's equally as strange that people are jumping to the defense of the Auburn AD and claiming that Gus was the first choice - just to avoid looking like you got dumped by a bammer - even though that wasn't the case anyway. Auburn's AD appears inept, and Auburn fans are saying as much... until a bammer claims Kirby got an offer. Then it was Gus all along and "we'd rather have Gus anyway".
