It matters because this is how the Heisman voters are told to think about it. They are not voting for an MVP. They are voting for the player that stands out to them.

I don't care what they're told, that's exactly what they're voting for dude. They are voting for the MVP of college football whether you choose to accept that or not

No it isn't. If it were, Vince Young would have won over Reggie Bush.

Take away Amari and Bama could still win. Take away Cooper, and Bama isn't SEC champs right now.

That's true. I think if you take Gordon away though, Wisconsin wins about 3 games. Their passing game is atrocious. They are 119th in the nation in passing offense. He's not going to win it though because of Wisconsin's embarrassing performance against Ohio State. He had the least talent around him by far though.

haha, whatever you say man. Reggie Bush put up silly numbers too that year. It's not like any MVP award is never without controversy.

to be fair Cooper had many Heisman moments vs Auburn
So did a lot of other WRs. Not an impressive accomplishment running straight by Auburn's secondary.

Running wide open is not a Heisman moment. As a matter of fact, I can not remember seeing Cooper make a great catch over the middle all years.

The award really doesn't mean anything anymore. The people that vote don't even take into consideration the things that are laid out as to who should get the award. It mentions ethics and moral character, and the last few winners have been pure thugs. Last year was the absolute worst.
Seems like it has just become a QB award so why don't they call it that instead of best football player in college football?

Heisman is basically a QB award that on the slightest of occasions will go to a RB.

And this is why I couldn't care less about this BS award. And they have to be on a top team.(Tebow being the rare exception) And said team, also needs to be a big name.(Baylor being a rare exception.)

Which is why he "stood out." This helps my point. The MVP argument is hard to make for Bush, because he was on such a talented team. Vince Young, on the other hand, was clearly the MVP of his team and one of the most productive QBs in college football history.

There are other examples. If it were an MVP trophy, Drew Brees would have won over Chris Weinke. Larry Fitzgerald or Eli Manning over Jason White. Adrian Peterson over Matt Leinart. Darren McFadden over Troy Smith.

The list goes on.

again, you're far too wrapped up in semantics. The Hesiman trophy is an MVP award. The MVP, in other sports leagues, is not awarded to the most valuable player on his team. It is awarded to the player who puts up the best stats across said league. The Heisman trophy is no different. I really have no idea what you're even trying to argue. Stop getting caught up into the root meaning of what the MVP is "supposed"to mean or what the Hesiman voters are "supposed" to vote on. They all vote for the player with the best stats in any league around the world.

It is not an MVP award. It is the most outstanding player award. In practice, this has become the best QB on the best team, unless a RB does something compelling.

In practice the most outstanding player award and MVP award are one in the same

No, they aren't. You telling me Mark Ingram was the MVP of CFB? Troy Smith? Jason White?

i wouldn't call those players the most outstanding players in college football either. what's your point? because they've gotten it wrong before that means it's not an MVP award?

I'm ok with amari coming in 2nd, but Mariota earned that trophy fair and square.

Have to agree. Cooper is outstanding and should have a great pro career as well but MM has been the best QB in the country for a couple of years now.

I was glad for Mark, but I really didn't care. I was at the basketball game when he won. The award is a joke and has been for a really long time.
