I think his brothers nickname was Sonic, and they used to play sonic the hedgehog together. His brother was a bouncer or security guard at a bar and was shot, helped other injured folks, then by the time he got medical attention it was too late. Sam adopted the nickname as a tribute.

Alabama fans have always referred to him as "Coach Bryant" out of respect. Maybe not so much on message boards, but if you ever hear Bama fans or players talk about him on TV or the radio or even on the Finebaum show... nobody calls him "Bear". Its always "Coach Bryant"
fans of other teams and the media are the ones who refer to him as "Bear"

I'm sure there are a ton of 20 year olds in the sec who have never heard of bear Bryant. This doesn't shock me at all.

Sam has no reason to be embarrassed. Why should LSU players give a frick about Bear Bryant or any other non-LSU coach who hasn't coached the game in over a decade?
