You think Tuscaloosa is more expensive than Oxford? On what basis?
I'm fine if you say it's a push.
But rent in Oxford for college students isn't extremely cheap. Also the restaurants are mid range or comparable to other places.
Tuscaloosa is some kind of upgrade as far as eminities to Oxford?
I think all of the coa numbers should be equal across the board btw.

This is yet another frick up by college athletics and the NCAA.
All Power 5 schools should have a set, flat rate paid. Leaving this up to the schools to calculate was obviously going to be a disaster from the start.

When UT and Auburn are the highest in the league you know it's already fricked up.

yea, and it's so obvious it amazes me. Alabama will trick the system anyway they can. and they're not alone. this is going to digress into bidding wars based on fictional COL numbers. the NCAA has gone to hell.

let's not kid ourselves. They're both college towns (as is Athens, so I'm not saying we're any different)...restaurants are cheap. Bars are cheap. Housing is cheap. Sure you're going to have your high end "luxury" places where the rich kids go, but those are outliers. Probably 90% of apartments on/near campus at ole miss, bama, uga, and every other SEC campus is going to be comparable.

Tennessee $5,666 or $629 per month 9 months
Auburn $5,586
Mississippi State $5,126
Ole Miss $4,500
South Carolina $4,151
Arkansas $4,002
Missouri $3,664
Florida $3,320
LSU $3,096
Alabama $2,892
Vanderbilt $2,780
Texas A&M $2,706
Georgia $2,598 or $288 per month 9 months
Kentucky $2,284
Maybe Vandy attendees / alumni can clarify this, but how in the wide wide world of sports can Vandy cost half as much as UT?
I don't think that's possible.
NCAA better jump on this immediately or magically we're going to see some school like Boise State or Oregon have COA at $20,000 or some ridiculous amount and they'll take over CFB. Worse, this will happen with an entire conference. It wouldn't surprise me to see the PAC12 start manipulating its numbers as a conference.
The NCAA is the only organization in history that rivals the stupidity of large governmental entities.

Restaurants in Oxford aren't cheap save for Ajax, still not "cheap" by any means. I agree on bars and housing though. I know rent ranges from about 300-over a grand in Oxford

lol ok.
Every college town is going to have top notch restaurants that are expensive. Athens sure as hell does, and I'm sure oxford is no different.
But as a whole, college town dining is cheap. It's just the way it is. When the majority of your customers 350+ days a year are 18-22 year olds, you're not going to be some murderer's row of high prices. The Mexican joints in oxford are no more expensive than the Mexican joints in other college towns.

I get why we are in top5, b/c the school is in a city. Are Auburn or Oxford really a city though, or are there just not that many housing options to make rents higher for students?
How soon before one of these schools jumps over $10K? I bet in 4 years.

Right I agree with all of that.
That's why I didnt understand the posters statement that the cost of living in Tuscaloosa was slightly higher than Oxford.
Disagree with their being a difference.
I do agree Athens is probably the most expensive or maybe Nashville. So whatever is the highest from those two should set the number and everyone has the same number.

heelllllll no it's not. Athens COL is probably one of the cheapest. Outside of UGA and downtown Athens is really poor. In fact I think Athens Clarke County is one of the poorest counties in the state. Nashville has got to be the highest just because it's not a college town but an actual major city.
I remember when I was at UGA me and a roommate had a 2 bedroom/1.5 bath apartment next to the stadium. Like you could hit a golf ball from our porch and hit Sanford. Our total overall rent was $700 per month.
ETA: My point was never that Athens should be up top. My point was that in every true college town (ie, basically all the cities except Nashville, and perhaps SC) the housing/dining/etc is going to be pretty equivalent.

I live in a 3 bedroom house for 300/month with two other roommates. You didn't look hard enough.

YOU pay $300 a month. So the 3BR house total rent is $900.

So utilities, cable and Internet for $300 a month.
Wow I was really short selling myself apparently
