How the new NCAA player stipends are impacting SEC football recruiting LINK

quote:

Jimmy Smith, the football coach at Cedar Grove (Ellenwood, Ga.) High School, looked at his three players, Netori Johnson, Tre’ Shaw, and Justin Shaffer, standouts in the Class of 2017, and asked this recruiting question:

“If Kentucky and Auburn were recruiting you, and you thought the quality of the education was the same at both schools and the playing time was the same at both schools, but you knew Auburn was going to give you this for expenses, and Kentucky was going to give you this for expenses, where would you go?”

Smith pointed to a sheet of paper listing Cost of Attendance (COA) stipends for each of the 14 SEC schools. Auburn’s number was $5,586. Kentucky’s number was $2,284.

Shaw, a defensive back who has 24 offers, didn’t hesitate with his answer.

“War Eagle,” he said with a smile.

COA breakdown for the SEC

Tennessee $5,666 or $629 per month 9 months
Auburn $5,586
Mississippi State $5,126
Ole Miss $4,500
South Carolina $4,151
Arkansas $4,002
Missouri $3,664
Florida $3,320
LSU $3,096
Alabama $2,892
Vanderbilt $2,780
Texas A&M $2,706
Georgia $2,598 or $288 per month 9 months
Kentucky $2,284

Auburn has been good and won some hardware in the past few years. MSU would have been a better comparison for the coach to use with UK.

Why are the stipends different at the schools? Especially some of the bigger SEC schools. There's no reason Alabama can't pay the same amount as any other SEC school?

Well, at least part of the Auburn payoffs are legal now.

This is stupid, nobody would choose Kentucky over Auburn, even if the stipends were equal.

Yeah I thought it was an odd comparison too. I mean I get the point he's trying to make, but it'd at least carry more weight if it was 2 similar programs.

Don't think those COA numbers are correct.I know Bama
"recalculated" their COA after they found themselves in the bottom 1/3.I believe they're 3rd now. What a complete crock. The COA is supposed to be evaluated independently by admissions officers and other school officials.Obvoiusly not the case with UT,AU or Bama

No way in hell Knoxville,Auburn or Tuscaloosa are a more expensive place to live than Athens.

Exactly, but if he had compared Auburn and Alabama, his point wouldn't work.

Yeah, those numbers don't make sense. How do they calculate the stipend? It's not voluntary with each school. What factors go in it? Ole Miss is cheaper than Bama to attend as a paying student and Oxford's standard of living is probably a little lower than t-town. So, wtf?

So,in the article it states that the school provides the factors that effect this calculation. What a crock of shite. No wonder Auburn's is twice Alabama's. But, I suspect Saban won't let this inequity live through another season so I'm not going to sweat it.

The numbers aren't correct. Bama already brought theirs up. Relax!
