I grew up cheering for both Tennessee and Kentucky (Kentucky mainly in basketball). I'm a border child one parent from each state so it made sense to me and Kentucky reminds me of my Mammaw - she loved them and was old enough to remember when UK had good football teams. I still cheer for Kentucky when we're not playing although many Tennessee and Kentucky fans would consider this the equivalent of a Bama fan cheering for Auburn.

My parents were both from Kentucky and relocated to Tennessee in the early 60's. My father went to UK and my Mom went to EKU, and both were huge UK fans. I grew up getting a hard time from them when UK beat UT in basketball season, and my friends (who thought I was a UK fan), would give me grief when UT would beat UK in football.

I grew up an Alabama fan. I'm still an Alabama fan, but I've also adopted Penn State because I'm going to grad school there next year. They rarely play each other, so it shouldn't conflict. I do know who I'd cheer for in a head-to-head matchup though.

Strangely most auburn fans I talk to grew up Alabama fans

I know a few who had parents that graduated from Alabama, and so as children they're told who to root for, but then they ended up going to auburn. But that's a small number. Most auburn fans I talk to grew up with one or both parents as auburn grads and they themselves went to auburn.

Baylor for me. It's a family thing.

When it came time to pick one, I visited both schools and that was that.

Once you are around their fans long enough you will remember your roots. I promise you this.

My question for Alums who switched - do you still pull for the childhood team secondly?

Not strange at all. They became educated.

My whole family are Bama fans. I chose AU when I was like six and I haven't looked back and we've had some mighty thin years at times.

One thing about being UA/UK fan is I've always hated UT!!

I know. A lot of Tennessee fans would rather poke their eyes out than cheer for UK. To me it's just a family thing. Vols are my primary but I can't really hate UK.

Yep. I will say though that some UGA posters on this board have had me second guessing at some points.

Do you live there yet? I thought it was gonna be easy to be gun-ho for both but unless you truly buy in it's not easy. Maybe it's my personality.

Btw, not to be creepy but where you living at? Dorms?

I mean, I don't want to trash Alabama on here because I don't feel like taking the heat I would get. But, let's just say I didn't belong at Alabama. Penn State is a place I feel I do belong. I fully intend on never coming back. So, yeah, truly buying in isn't a problem for me. I've already done it.

I move August 7th. I have an apartment off North Atherton, in a community called Northbrook Greens.

Grew up an OU fan, had family, including my grandmother attend OU. Thought I was going to OU until I got my acceptance letter from Alabama first. Still root for OU, and was hoping like crazy for the two teams to meet. After the loss it pretty much solidified that I'm a Bama fan, but I'll start cheering for the Sooners once we beat them again.

Oh, well, yea sounds like you're good. Georgia had been my home most of my life, I loved the south, and I never intended on giving up UGA but instead rooting for PSU with them. But they are as obnoxious as southerners are about their region and program and it was just nuts. But, as a misplaced southerner even I grew to love State College and at least respect their football spectacle (not their program, frick their program). Not that you care I just like shooting the shite with any other southerner who has or will go there.

But good for you, PSU is the greatest if you can truly embrace it. shite, now that I am older and more mature and their program has been blasted back downward I'd easily consider doing pos-grad work there.
