It is hard to say. After all, most gay guys who play football are presumably going to be indistinguishable in demeanor from most straight guys, since they share the same masculine interests--but I would assume that the ones that are there remain in the closet because they are still afraid of being rejected or being treated with hostility.
Hopefully that is changing--and if the new Vandy recruit can get through the SEC unscathed, that may encourage others to breathe a little more freely.
Obviously from the responses in this thread, it is still a topic that makes a lot of guys very nervous and that they have difficulty discussing seriously....

How original. I was completely blindsided with that one.
Texas A&M is crucified in the media/just about everywhere else for being "not gay friendly;" yet on the SECr, we're some kind of an urban legend.
Let's hear it for being loved/hated by all.

I'm still waiting to see if a Mizzou poster will come in here and know who I'm talking about. I met some guys from up there that were all adamant that one of their better players of the past few years was pretty flaming. Same for bama, as far as that goes.

Wasn't homosexuality prevalent in ancient Sparta? Just sayin'.

If UA fielded a D that did an elephant train with each other after the game, I wouldn't give a shite.
How well they play is all that should matter.

No shite? You think I care if one of our players is gay? I might joke about him, but then again I would joke if they couldn't speak well or were white, so it's far from just a gay thing.

All joking aside, I would imagine that anywhere from 5-10% of all college football players are gay just like the general population. Frankly, I don't care what they do in their private life as long as they can run a 4.3 40.

That's assuming a randomized sample. The players come from high schools, where it is more difficult to conceal one's sexual orientation. As such, they were probably weeded out before they were noticed by college recruiters.
Still, it's highly probably that some have managed to conceal their personal lives and make to the power conferences like the SEC.

If they aren't breaking the law, no one should care.
If Jacob Coker came out wearing pumps and a garter belt, but threw for 3 TDs against SEC competition....
Roll Tide.

I was told by someone on the Bama football team that many players had suspicions about Julio Jones

I've heard that from both kids that were at UA at the same time he was, and kids that went to high school with him.

Google imaging julio jones girlfriend provides nothing to dispel the rumors either

Apparently there were some high school incidents that raised suspicion, and that when he was out in Tuscaloosa he would never be with a female.
Doesn't change the fact that he is fast and agile as hell.

I'm not sure why it matters how many are gay. If they can play football then who gives a frick if they like other dudes?

Too high. Most figures I've seen put the gay population at 3 or 4%. I'd also think its not too far fetched to believe fewer homosexuals would pursue college football.

Greg Hardy (The Kraken) is supposedly bi. And it wouldn't surprise me either.

Does every school have homosexuals, or is just a select few that pull that type of athlete?
If somewhere between 2% and 10% of the general population is gay then it is probable that a similar number on a sports team is gay as well. As long as they are not grabbing my arse in the locker room I could care less. I was more concerned by a few guys in the backfield that got stoned and cost us at least 1 critical game.
Folks would be surprised at the really hot women that are gay. Wide receiver I played with came out of the closet after college but he liked pretty boys so as an unattractive lineman I never was worried about him making a pass at me.
