By the way, for you that are unfortunate enough to live outside the utopia that is Mississippi, we apparently have solved all of our problems that this is being debated and voted on in the state legislature.

That's how I felt when Congress was engulfed re:steroids in baseball. Really? Can't we get a soccer mom or HOA president to figure that out?

If 25 players exhaust eligibility, we're going to give them $10k each? Like hell the NCAA would allow that. They could not circumvent state law, but they could ban us from postseason.

I can see an alternate solution

Kids are already getting a free education which is compensation for their services - fair or not - so putting money in their pockets is beyond that point. What if instead such a fund were established to not pay players but to pay for insurance while they play sports at the schools?

#1 This would address a need
#2 This would eliminate the need to declare for the draft early based on injury
#3 This could cover not only football players but all sports a university sponsors

In tandem to this the law could require the state schools to mandate specific classes required by all student athletes that cover money management, public speaking, and contract comprehension type classes that would create better educated future citizens of the USA.

That's a definite recruiting advantage and one the NCAA won't be able to touch. Interested to see how this plays out.

The NCAA will touch it when they don't allow MS schools to participate in post-season play.

House Bill 189

No legislator in the State of Mississippi shall introduce any legislation pertaining to athletics until this sovereign State no longer ranks in the bottom 5 of every known comparison in Education.

We already know how it plays out when a state law contradicts NCAA policy. Ask South Carolina what happened when they did not remove what the NCAA considered a confederate symbol from their state flag.

If we want to pay football players, Universities can either:

A) Not take any federal money, at all. Therefore, exempt from any Title IX laws.

This is going to become the correct answer sooner than later.

You've just described 70% of all Legislation offered at a State Level. Any State

It applies to the Feds far more than it does states, any state, at any level.

So, given that the NCAA is basically a Federal-type bureaucratic mess, the question is would we rather have the NCAA try to fix themselves or states get involved and try to throw something against the wall that sticks.

BTW, I do believe there is a hidden agenda buried in this Mississippi proposal.

Only applies to hosting a basketball regional, which will never affect us. We've hosted 21 post season baseball tournies (regionals and supers) since the NCAA told us to remove the battle flag .... yet it is still flying.

frick the NCAA.

I don't think schools need to pay players. I don't have a problem with a player selling his autograph. That's where the NCAA needs to frick off.

This whole thread is stupid as fugggggggg.

This bill won't even make it out of committee so why bring it up for discussion on tRant?

GTFO with this shite, it's dead in the water just like 95% of all the bills written.

If we're gonna talk about bills that aren't gonna make it out of committee let's bring to light other bills as well like the one raising Homestead exemption from the state, it's desperately needed to help elderly folks out with increased values coming in across the state on ad valorem taxes. But NOOOOOOO, it's not gonna make it just like HB 188 dumb shite bill meant to bring fame to it's writer or stir shite up.

Taxman knows.

likely the same woman trying to limit the state's Castle Laws to only a 30 foot radius......stating that you are out of harms way at that distance.
