It's always blown my mind how UGA has become so dominant in minor sports but can't get one of the "big 3" to an elite level

it'll happen eventually though. I can't imagine UGA's potential if it could just hire a Johnny Jones type coach that's fairly average with x's and o's but can recruit out of his mind.

Jay Jacobs has rebounded nicely IMO.

He looks like a complete goober, but there is no doubt that he is AUBURN through and through.

Alleva at LSU gets a B
He has done a good job of maintaining and improving facilities with others on the horizon.
He started right when our baseball coach was hired but that was Bertman's hire but he has made suggestions to hiring assistants which has been positive.
He hired new women's coach and although LSU has fallen Caldwell does make the tourney.
He hired Trent Johnson right after taking over but that was a bad fit, he hired Johnny Jones and the jury is still out but LSU is consistently better than the past coach.
He hasn't had to make a big football decision but has made recommendations about assistants Miles should go after.
No big scandals on his watch either and has been on board with dismissing players no matter how good they were like Perriloux and Mathieu.
I think he has LSU's best interests at the table when it comes to equity across the conference.
I think he's being petty with this Chavis deal.
He could have left for Tennessee but didn't.
He is on NCAA selection committee for hoops and did the SEC proud on selection sunday this year.

I laughed.

I give Bjork a B. Didn't hire Freeze, didn't start new basketball arena, his stadium expansion is just cramming a bunch more seats in the endzone BUT the coaches seem to like him and he realized the firing of Jones was bad for OM. He gets too much credit by our fans who can only point out how much better than Boone he is.

I completely agree. i almost gave him a "B" instead of a "B+"

I think the difference between a "b" and an "a" for an athletic director in the SEC is the "big 3". Whether people like Les and Maineri or not, Alleva would be the laughing stock of collegiate athletics if he fired either of the two. they'd be hired by a big program within a week after.

he's given them all the resources they need as far as facilities and assistant salaries are concerned. there's not much else he can honestly do on that end

Barnhart gets a C+. Started off well hiring Brooks, Cohen and Mitchell. Even managed to show Tubby the door finally.

But royally fricked up hiring Billy Clyde and promoting Joker. Ticked off a lot of fans with his smart comments in the media. Also rubbed a lot of boosters the wrong way and had trouble rustling up funds.

Cal hire was forced on him by boosters and fans. Stoops wasn't on his list of candidates but Stoops kept hounding him and came in and blew the interview out of the water.

However Commonwealth is undergoing a significant overhaul, football practice fields and facilities are getting another upgrade as well. Women's sports are excelling. New softball and soccer complexes. Plans to redo/revamp the Cliff supposedly in the works. Basketball is of course killing it. Football future looks bright, year 3 will be pivotal.

My final judgment on Mitch's legacy is going to rest on how Stoops does. Mitch has gone all in to try and get football turned around and so far we finally seem to be back on the right track. Brooks laid a great foundation, Joker took a dump on it, and Stoops is putting the pieces back together.

To be fair I'm sure Brooks basically hand-picked his successor. I'm sure brooks made one hell of a case for hiring joker at the time.

I'm young, but I've never seen Kentucky athletics top to bottom be as competitive as it is today. I think that alone gives him a "B", but you know the situation better than I do

Something really needs to be done with Stegeman. It is an utter embarrassment.

That is not specific in any way. What shoudl be done?

Quit dragging his feet on the IPF

The one that is going to actually come to fruition on his watch? Are you by his side everyday? I wouldn't think so, so how do you know where he is in the process? You realize they don't just take an airplane hangar and set it somewhere. There is so much planning, scouting, zoning, etc involved before shovels ever hit dirt.

3. Mark Fox is a likeable guy, but he needs to be fired.

Why? And who will we get right now that is better? You probably aren't aware, but UGA has only made the tourney 12 times ever (one of which was the most miraculous, improabable way ever), 2 of which are in the last 5 years by Fox. I could expand on this issue further but this isn't the place.

quote:

I was on the fence about Perno being fired, but Strickland is horrid.

This isn't specific, it's an obvservation. And if Stricklin is horrid, then perno was whatever horrid^5 is. Anyone with some reasoning skills knew it would be at least 2 to 3 years before we got back to being good again due to the MASSIVE hole perno put us in.

quote:

Foley needs major renovations, not just a facelift.

Not specific. WHAT renovations need to be done? I'm sure you're familiar with how it is laid out...so unless you completely demolish the whole thing and either move it or orient it in another direciton, there's only so much that can be done infrastructure-wise.

I'm not really sure what happened with our gymnastics program

It's called the greatest gymnastics coach of all time retiring. When you're #1 for 5 straight years, there's only one direction to go from there.

quote:

Something needs to be done.

Not specific. Something like what?

quote:

That's a start

Actually, it's not even a start. You didn't give any specifics on what AD needs to do aside from firing Mark Fox, who just took our perennial doormat basketball team back to the NCAAT as a 10 seed.

Frickin brilliant.

We've had the opposite of that, a coach who was an average recruiter but an elite Xs and Os coach, Jim Harrick. And he us RANKED for God's sake in basketball and selling out every home game. He had one of the greatest teams in UGA basketball history.

But, he was also fired for cheating. So there's that.

Eric Hyman fricking sucks as an AD. South Carolina can have him back. Our athletic department has gone from a top 10 college cup contender to barely a top 20 program.

Anyone with a brain can see that we needed a change at HC in Men's Basketball, not just this year, but last year as well.

He has yet to hire, or fire anyone. And at this point I have zero confidence in him to conduct a coaching search with competence.

Grade is an F for fricking Sucks!

let's be honest-outside of Billy Donovan, has there ever been a major basketball run in the SEC not marred by a recruiting scandal?

Rupp
Dale Brown
Bruce Pearl
Harrick
etc...

Well to be fair, ours wasn't a recruiting scandal. It was mainly based on improper benefits to a current players and nepotism allowing a final exam of questions like "how many points is a 3 pointer worth"...but I see what you're saying lol.

JJ scores like an 83/100. He does good enough to say ok your doing fine. But a lot of the stuff that has come out post-Chizik era and the Barbee debacle have left a bad taste in my mouth.

That doesn't make sense. If the CAJ hire is as good as yall are saying it is, it shouldn't affect the AD's grade if he flukes. I wouldn't blame Stricklin if Howland doesn't pan out. Just goes to show yalls insecurity with hiring AJ.

I agree with pretty much all of this. I still think Jay Jacobs is much too reactionary and shells out way too much money way too quickly. I loved what Malzahn did year one, but it just made me uneasy how much money and how big of an extension he got. Reminded me of the Chizik contract debacle. He seems to have made some great hires, but they still have to play out. I can't judge them for sure yet. I feel like he embarrasses the school with his whiney antics from time to time, but I'd rather have someone who is a crazy homer than someone who is apathetic. He's getting better.
Grade: B/B- ; trending upwards.

C: Jacobs has made terrible hires and atrocious contract extensions at times, but he has gotten Pearl, Malzahn (although he isn't completely proven yet), and Myers (softball). He has been very strong in support of Auburn and is making improvements to facilities, like the IPF, Auburn Arena, and the JHS improvements.
