"Targeting/Initiating Contact With the Crown of the Helmet
ARTICLE 3. No player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul. (Rule 9-6.)

Defenseless Player: Contact to Head or Neck Area
ARTICLE 4. No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul (Rules 2-27-14 and 9-6)."

These are the only rules in the book that mention helmet to helmet contact, and even the dumbest Auburn fan can see that Dial's hit doesn't fit ether description.

Since Dial DID NOT lead with the crown of his helmet, Murray must be a "defenseless player".

But, Murray wasn't a defenseless player...he was a defender.

So, the correct call was made. NOT A PENALTY.

It doesn't matter if the blocker (Dial) hits someone with his helmet. The rules state it must be the crown of the helmet.

This thread is hilarious now.

Looked like a bounty shot. Bama had their shots before the game so they were immune to the flag.

Dial could have just stepped in front of Murray and pushed him down and taken him out of the play (because Murray was obviously the best tackler out there). No real reason to take a shot like that unless he was trying to take Murray out of the game - ala Bounty Hit. Just an unnecessary, dirty play.

Maybe they could just play two hand touch next year?

Even the idiot commentators noted that the refs should have been paying more attention because spineless players like to target the QBs during INT returns. Legal or not, that was Fairley-esque.

should've been a flag

same hit, but less violent had been called against UGA earlier in the quarter and gave Bama another couple shots at the endzone.

that was ENTIRELY different situation. that was a defenseless player (QB throwing the ball). it has different rules than a QB running to tackle someone.

Dial is a very classy kid. Murray was fair game, and the video clearly shows a shoulder into Murrays chest. Just dont see the problem.

Led with shoulder, helmet to helmet contact though. Missed a 15 yard penalty.

Later in the game though, Dee Milliner got a 15 yard penalty for shoving a guy who just poked him in the eyes. So net blown calls favor Bama by 15 yards.

Great game though Georgia One of the best championship games ever

Seriously, don't waste your time. Bama hate is way to thick for anyone to listen to actual rules and such. We are the great Satan and these morons are like fanatical Muslims.

I haven't read anything besides the first page, but I'll assume it's basically Bama fans sticking their fingers in their ears screaming that 'it wasn't really against the rules because of blah blah blah'.

Whether he is normally classy or not, that was a bogus play. I don't know how anyone who has seen it can justify it, but whatever. Enjoy the victory. Your team played like champions, even if this was a classless hit.

Helmet to helmet contact. That's the issue here.

here is the rule; specifies the crown of the helmet.

Initiating Contact/Targeting an Opponent
ARTICLE 3. a. No player shall initiate contact and target an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul.
b. No player shall initiate contact and target a defenseless opponent above the shoulders. When in question, it is a foul. (Refer to Points of Emphasis on FR-9 for a description of “Defenseless Player.”)
PENALTY (a-B.)—Personal foul. 15 yards from the basic spot, or 15 yards from the succeeding spot for dead-ball fouls. Also, automatic first down for fouls by Team B if not in conflict with other rules. (Exception: Penalties for offensive team personal fouls behind the neutral zone are enforced from the previous spot. Safety if the foul occurs behind Team A’s goal line) [S7, S24, S34, S38, S39, S40, S41, S45 or S46]. Flagrant offenders shall be disqualified [S47].
