i don't think he should be cancelled or anything, i don't even think he needs to grovel and make a public apology who cares tbh, but the fact youre saying what he said isn't racist is insane lol. can you at least admit it was rude? pretty sure if i got in your face calling you names you wouldn't like it.

If you think calling a person a stereotypical name is not racist. If you think it is, you do not understand actual racism and I cannot help your pea sized brain.

I am not sure what the folks who raise hell about someone making fun of a particular group of people are trying to attain. I get that no one likes to be made fun of, but it happens to everyone, so are they trying to make it against the law? All this politically correct stuff is fine in it's place and time, but you have to cut loose and have some fun occasionally. If you can't allow others to occasionally laugh at you, then you have some growing up to do.

And by place and time, I mean there are situations that should be taken more serious than others, like a funeral or a religious procession, just to name a couple. If the person at the podium did what this man did, that would be inappropriate, but him just sitting on the couch is totally different.

The comment was racial. That does not make it racist. Racism is what is in someone's heart, not what comes out of their mouth. Often those are the same, but not always.

I make joking comments about just about every group of people at some point. That doesn't make me racist, homophobic, or any other term you want to use. I am a strong believer in showing love to every other person.

My friend group from high school/college is one of the most diverse you will ever see. We have a Mexican guy we all call spic, a cajun guy we call coonass, a guy of Ukrainian heritage we call Rooskie, and others I probably shouldn't type here. My favorite is my Indian (not Native American) friend that we all call Chief. None of us are racist, but rather we love each other like brothers and can both celebrate and even joke about our different races/heritages.

Obviously, we are much more careful about this than we were in the past just because society likes to think that true inclusiveness requires us to ignore our differences when in fact true inclusiveness is celebrating our differences.

The player on the video is not necessarily racist for saying what he did, but he is an idiot for posting it.

Yes. What y’all said was racist. No matter what you feel in your heart. Even if you were just joking. You don’t call other people spics do you? No? Wonder why? If I walk to up a black person and call them the N word, that’s fricking racism. It’s not hard

Continue to spread your love bro. It’s not what you say that makes something racist though

Why is it so hard to get that people can say racist things even if they don’t want to hang them from a tree?

Correct, it is not always what you say. Glad we agree.

ETA: some people would say you calling a black man "bro" is racist.

If you said it around a group of friends as a joke, probably not. If you post it to IG or Twitter, you may/may not be racist but you are definitely dumb.

It also depends on the black person you said it to. I wouldn't punch you, I'd probably just comeback with calling you Poindexter or some stupid shite like that. I am not easily offended.

Am I? I personally don't find it offensive, but as I said, SOME would say it is racist.

LINK
quote:

Calling a black woman or man ‘sister’ or ‘brother,’ respectively.
Why it’s offensive: If the perpetrator doesn’t give everyone these nicknames, either statement claims kinship that probably isn’t there, suggested Rev. Shannon Craigo-Snell, a professor of theology at the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Kentucky and coauthor of “No Innocent Bystanders: Becoming an Ally in the Struggle for Justice.”

“It’s claiming familiarity and intimacy,” she added. “And often when I see this happen, it’s actually in a situation where the white person is trying to gloss over real hierarchy of status or conflict.”

If the person hasn’t really interacted with black people before, she may also be unconsciously overcompensating when trying to make a connection by assuming that’s how black people talk.

What to say: Ask him why he said it and explain the significance. Then, suggest he maybe not call a black person “sister” or “brother” unless that person invited him to do so.

I agree 100%. But as long as people are looking for reasons to be offended, this conversation will always be about splitting hairs. I honestly don't know how white people deal with this constantly. It doesn't matter what y'all say, someone is going to find a reason to be offended or to push the agenda of someone else being offended.

I'm not talking about what the UGA player said but more the general environment. What he said was at the very least a disparaging comment and to post it was stupid. If he was white, he would have already been executed.

If an Asian/white player made a the joke about African Americans, the player would most likely lose their scholarship immediately. Remember the Florida qb commit that lost his scholarship over a song lyric?
