What was Gene's record after he didn't have Gus as OC?

Gene wasn't canned for just the overall record. He lost the entire team, fans and administration in 2012. Never been more embarrassed to watch a team play. If he'd pulled a Gus and found 7 wins that year he'd been given another year. Though Gus has struggled with Auburn's main rivals, other than a blow out in BR he hasn't been beaten like Chiz was in 2011 either. So you have 2012 and then terrible performances in 2011 against main rivals. Add the lack of any fight in the team in 2012, a change had to be made. I suspect if it hadn't of been made Auburn would be without an SEC title and BCS title game birth and in much worse shape going into 2017 than we currently are...so in the long run whether Gus is the answer or not things are better at Auburn because we went with Gus.

AU didn't fire GC because of his overall record. He was trending toward total failure. Compare Mike Shula's record to other Bama coaches when he was fired.

Gus has proven what he can do with a good QB. He shite the bed with QBs the past few years. There is no doubt about that. He finally let his son Lashley go and brought in an OC that can actual coach and find QB talent.

He made a huge mistake in hiring Ellis Johnson his first year, and it probably cost him a NC. But he has been steadily building the defensive side of the ball since then.

The difference is, Gus looks to be learning from his mistakes and developing as a HC (it is only his fifth year of being a HC). Chizik made good moves at first, but he went full retard after winning a NC and wanted to micromanage everything. And he totally lost control from trying to be over-controlling.

We will see this year if Gus can recover from the coaching PTSD that Jeremy Johnson left him in.

You've got some years way off on Chiz but I get your point.

Name the top 5 QBs Gus signed out of high school and coached. The list is pretty Les Miles-esque
