He wasn't slamming Vandy, he was slamming the SEC. Listen to the 2-minute soundbite: "In the SEC, the emphasis is on football...that's really the reason for their existence (laughter)."

He was trying to say Vandy's size, academic standards, and lack of student and fan interest made it hard for them to compete in such a Neanderthal league, and at Penn State he has the size, academics, fan support, and morals (cough cough).

Doesn't make him less of a POS, just a different kind.

oesn't Penn State have the largest alumni base in the country? I believe that makes it the very definition of a diploma mill.

I knew a guy who went to undergrad at USC, and grad school at PSU. He didn't have a single decent thing to say about the place, and laughed about its "rigorous academic standards."

I remember around the time Paterno was fired, people were talking about how it was an absolute joke of an academic institution when he became head coach. You don't just make up a ton of ground in 40 years, so I'm guessing it's still a pretty easy school.

Also, it was pretty telling when several of their professors were bashing the school's "football rules everything" mentality that permeated throughout PSU.

Yep. No knock on Vandy at all. Essentially said football was all that mattered in the SEC. Bad reporting. So there is not as much emphasis on football in the Big 10 as in the SEC?

They always try to point to academics as some sort of way of legitimizing how irrelevant they've been for a decade and a half.

Penn St., while an upper tier state school, has a huge alumni base that loves to tout how great of an academic institution it is. It's to the point that when a Penn St. grad tells you where he went to college, he or she expects you to react as if he said Harvard or Yale or Oxford.

It is quite a cultish alumni base. unfortunately it's also an enormous one. 1 in every 130 or so Americans with a college degree received it from Penn St.
