It's pretty tough to pick the top 7 spots. I think Spurrier is hands down the top coach based on results in the SEC. From there anyone can pick 'em.
The only one that amazes me is Fullmer. I really can't put my finger on why I don't respect him as a top SEC coach.

2. Miles
3. Meyer
4. Tuberville
5. Saban
6. Fulmer
7. Croom
8. Petrino
9. Richt
10. Brooks
11. Nutt
12. Johnson

Gotta disagree, Johnson has gone toe to toe with some bigger teams ever so often. This team wouldn't get out of the middle of the pack in the weakest BCS conferences. I think he's done great.

I'm not even going to argue this point with you, because it's so ridiculous. DiNardo had a much tougher job when he became Vandy's head coach, and he did quite well ( LINK):

quote:

In 1991, DiNardo took the head coach job at Vanderbilt University. During 1988, 1989, and 1990, Vanderbilt finished 3-8, 1-10, and 1-10. Then DiNardo took over and went 5-6, 4-7, 4-7, and 5-6. DiNardo's two biggest wins were when he led the Commodores to victory over #17 Georgia on October 19, 1991 and #25 Ole Miss on September 19, 1992.

it is really hard to rank the SEC coaches though. All of them are so good,

You really have to ask how would somebody like Miles do at State? How would Croom perform at Florida? What would Urban do at Vandy? It's tight. Think about the salaries they are making and how hard it will be to win each division. It seems some schools ain't gonna get their money's worth. Some good coaches will be on the hot seat soon.

It wasn't a shot at GD, more a defense of BJ. They have been close to bowl eligble plus they are way more competitive in a tougher SEC now than then (no 65-0 losses under BJ) plus they've beaten UT, SC, GA while playing everyone tough. Better recruiter too- just saying

Any list that has Urban Meyer #1, must have Les Miles tied for #1. They have both won a NC. For those dumbfricks out there who say Miles is winning with Saban's players, well, Urban Meyer is winning with Ron Zook's players. They are dead even.

Excellent post. As I have said before, the top 6-8 coaches in this league are like trying to choose between Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston. Not better, just different. I also think that Meyer, Richt, Saban, Miles, Croom, Nutt and Tubbs are at the perfect school right now. By this I mean, I don't think Miles would do well at MS State but has been dominant at LSU b/c he is the right coach at the right job, Croom would be terrible at Florida but has been good for St, Saban is the right coach to build Bama but Meyer would be a very bad fit. Petrino and Spurrier are kind of weird fits though, in my opinion. All of these excellent coaches speak volumes of the type of conference the SEC is. RTR.

Meyer would probably be fine at Bama. His personality is not much different than Saban's.

I am not saying Miles and the others are not top notch coaches, but how much "coaching" do they actually have to do with a virtual plethora of talent at their disposal.

I just think there are excellent coaches that aren't allotted the proper respect for their coaching ability simply based on W's. You can be the best coach on earth, but if the talene tlevel doesn't match your rivals, then you are pounding sand.

Saban is a little overated because he was fortunate to have the players that Dinardo and Shula recruited. He also benefitted by the timing in which he came to both programs regarding recruiting....Spears/Clayton=#1 class and the state of Alabama's rare top-notch HS Sr class. These kids were LSU and Alabama's to lose anyway.

I've never understood why Johnson has always been #12 on these lists. He was very successful at Furman. Is he a bad coach just because he's employed by Vandy? I bet MSU, arkansas, or UT would swap coaches with Vandy right now if the offer was made. After seeing Croom's 4th and 15 call in the MSU-Auburn game, he has a firm grip on #12.
