Our defense was actually the opposite. We were not good for most of the season but late season games with LSU, State and Oklahoma State were among our best of the year.

Sounds like you're trying to talk yourself into an early road win with a freshman quarterback. You may well win it, but you'll need your best game of the year to do it.

Interesting - I never know exactly how to characterize Ole Miss' defense. For instance, we had tons of yards and points against Ole Miss last year in our loss, but I felt like Ole Miss kind of established the tone with pressure and hitting early on. They seem to be a defense that makes plays and gives up plays more so than, say, Alabama.

LSU has 18 out of 22 starters back, Bama and Ole Miss at home, and will be the team to beat.

OM is losing:

Tackles - 5 of top 10 (Doesn't even include Nkemdiche)
TFL - 6 of top 10 (
Sacks - 6 of 12 who recorded sacks
Ints - 5 of 8 who recorded

But the defense is going to get better without question? Right, I'm the one who's "hoping" here.

Why do you guys do this to yourselves?

LSU will be very good and could win the National Title. However, they will not be "the team to beat". That's just silly.

No doubt. Even when we lead the nation in scoring defense in 2014 we gave up a lot of yards. We struggled more in red zone and third down defense last year for some reason. Cody Prewitt was just a hell of a player and of course Senquez Golson. We struggled to replace them. We return all of our corners this year and that should help improve our third down conversion defense, which was really bad last year with two new corners and an injured Conner missing most of the year.

Yes, you really are. We also get gross back, who is one of the most disruptive linemen in the league. We also get Tony Connor back, who will be a first rounder if he has no lasting effects from his knee injury. We will be better at every position on the defense except possibly free and strong safety. And even at those two positions it's not like we are replacing a Patrick Willis type player.

You also said in another thread that the Oline is the shakiest position group.

So, a questionable Oline coupled with an unproven running game + a defense that's having to replace around half of it's production from last year.

Your definitely right. I don't see how anyone wouldn't think that OM is going to be better.

Honestly, I would say we have 12 percent chance. Yes, we lose some superstars but I honestly think we can be better than last year if our secondary can somehow be formidable. Our D line is still going to be gross. Our running game should be better and I know everyone is thinking we lost SO MUCH talent... But I think overall we are more complete team besides losing Elston and Hilton. Tony Conner will hopefuly be at 90 percent or better.

The schedule is the major hang up. It is a brutal brutal path to ATL. Our Receiver is going to be gross and passing game can carry us for a while. But I don't know if we can make it through the schedule. LSU should be scary, but they may find a way to run the same play every game and lose for us to get in. Bama is always in the competition but I feel like they won't win it this year.

That's my 2 cents and I will probably get downvotes for giving a decent answer. Other than LSU, I think we have the second or third best chance of getting there.

Tell this to Ole Miss fans last season.

There it is. I remember using this argument quite a bit myself.

I don't think anything you said was unreasonable but I would still put you behind LSU and Bama. Kelly is a stud though.

Yea, I think we are better than Bama because of Kelly.... BUT Bama is Bama haha. So that's why I put "or third" on my post.

Pretty much, I realize its unrealistic to assume that they are going to win the west every year that Saban is there but I'm not betting against him at this point.

I think Ole Miss is probably the 3rd most talented team in the West with the best, most consistent QB. I think LSU and Alabama are pretty similar talent wise across the board and Ole Miss is solidly #3, but having a legitimate game changer QB is a pretty huge deal (especially with those receivers).

So, it'll be interesting. I certainly think they have a shot.

Honestly - I'm still a little shocked we won it in 2014 and 2015 (2014 more so, that team had no business winning it).

I know it sounds haughty and pompous and "typical Bammer", but I truly think 2016 is the best blend of talent/depth/experience we've had since 2012. Doesn't mean it will all work its way out, though.

I said our oline was our weakest spring position. Both starting tackles are not present. And we are basically just working depth in the spring. Doesn't mean the group will be bad. It won't. Tunsil, who is the best lineman in our schools history, will be impossible to replicate. But he also didn't play in half our games last year, including two of three losses. Overall though this should be our best oline starting five in freezes era. Our running game is what it is. Which is to say just a compliment to our passing game. But we do return 70 percent of our rushing and add the highest rated back we've had in years. The defense isn't dropping off. Forget that. We return seven of ten from the dline rotation and add Isaac Gross who was one of the secs top interior guys for three years. We start two linebackers, one our leading tackler and the other Oregon states leading tackler. We have every corner on the team returning which is huge. And while we lost Hilton and Elston at safety we also get a guy back in Connor who has first round talent, and has proven it in the SEC. If you're on our schedule you should hope more than anything that Greg Little cant handle college football yet and that Robert Conyers can't recover from acl surgery. We are going to be good. This is the most talented roster we've had in the modern era.
