Hiring Chavis puts him squarely in the hot seat, with how big we were swinging at DCs I think we wanted to leave no excuse for him and give him every resource to win. He still has plenty to prove

Chavis will do well for A&M, but here's the thing. There's a big difference between having a good defense and one that's ranked in the top 10 or top 20. You can have a good defense with a poor TOP, but I'm not sure you can have a great one and the better defense usually wins the big games in this conference.

If I were Sumlin, I'd slow down the offense a little. It doesn't have to be like ours, but give the defense some rest.

Check the total D statistic... Not in top 80. Thank you for your intense interest in Texas Aggie football.

boy talk about a false dichotomy. This really shouldn't need clarification, but he obviously wants both sets of data.

OK, here you go:

w/ LSU

YEAR - TOP - TOTAL D - SCORING D
2014 - 33:08 - 316.8 - 17.5
2013 - 30:00 - 340.7 - 22.0
2012 - 30:34 - 307.6 - 17.5
2011 - 31:29 - 261.5 - 11.3
2010 - 30:10 - 307.2 - 18.2
2009 - 27:50 - 327.6 - 16.2

w/ Tennessee:

YEAR - TOP - TOTAL D - SCORING D
2008 - 28:33 - 263.5 - 16.8
2007 - 28:26 - 403.3 - 27.3
2006 - 28:20 - 327.5 - 19.5
2005 - 29:27 - 298.2 - 18.6

I don't now how true that is. Maybe we read different posts or, more likely, we remember certain posts more, but I think most Ags (me included) have been waiting for this season to see what Sumlin brings.

I think what happened last season was we went into SC and blew them out of the water when they were ranked #9. It wasn't until later that we realized how bad SC was. Of course there was excitement and then...

well everything imploded.

However, if you go back to the predictions before the 2014 season started most Ags predicted a 7-6 to 9-4 type season. Which is exactly what happened. It just happened differently than expected. Furthermore, most of us thought (and I imagine continue to believe) that this is the season where Sumlin needs to show us what he's got. I think that's fair.

Chavis is an excellent DC overall. One of the most accomplished Defensive coaches of the last couple decades.

But he turns to jello with small leads late in games.

See:
1999 UT vs Arky

2000 UT vs Florida

2001 UT vs UGA

2006 UT vs Florida

2006 UT vs LSU

2012 LSU vs Clemson

2012 LsU vs Bama

2013 LSU vs UGA

Those are just off the top of my head.

The lack of leadership by a starting QB getting carried out of a bar right before a huge game was a morale killer.

Wish Kyle Allen had beaten Hill out at start of season.

Nope. Chavis was automatic when he had the lead with under 2 minutes to go. He's put the defense into a soft zone 15 yards off the ball. Offenses could routinely hit 20yd passes. He also was notorious for taking the LBs completely out of the play by making them drop so far down the field causing major mismatches.

Corndogs are absolutely obsessed with dogging on Chavis.

There was never a peep of dissatisfaction until Chavis found a better job.

I'm not sure, but they finished 5-7 that year.

edit: Just looked it up and they were 97th in TOP. I don't know how to explain that, but something's obviously funny, when you consider their record.

edit2: Figured it out. They were 115th in offense, averaging only 269 ypg and 17 ppg. That's still impressive, but if they can't score, you have to think the other team wasn't real worried about playing hard on offense.
