This hiring seems much more on the up and up than Franklin's departure. This article is nothing like Franklin stringing everyone along. Vanderbilt is yet to release an official announcement.

Good to hear. Y'all need a decent human being after Franlin's antics and Mason, at least from what little I've seen, comes across as a good guy. Should definitely help Vandy heal.

Be careful of putting Franklin down too much...he changed the mindset at Vandy. Not an easy thing to do, Vandy should be grateful for Franklin...in spite of him trying to pillage the recruiting class. He leaves them a lot better off than he found them.

For the record, I completely agree with this.

^I think you give Franklin too much credit and your AD too little. Vandy was never as bad as the W-L record reflected. However, for a long time they scheduled too hard for a team in desperate need of W's to build confidence, had an AD that didn't care, and neglected football. Your AD changed 90+ percent of that and Franklin, imo, walked into a perfect storm, including inheriting Matthews (who I really can't rave about enough). Without Matthews and the actions of the AD, Franklin wouldn't have accomplished much more than being able to get the fans excited -- that's important in its own right but it takes more than that to win. Franklin was still a competent to good coach but he also benefited greatly by being at the right place at exactly the right time.

So? Why is this such a huge deal?

I'm not following you unless you're just pointing out Rodgers was yet another one that Franklin inherited. Jordan Rodgers was there under Caldwell. And isn't he Aaron's brother?

When I said "including Matthews" I didn't mean he was the only one Franklin inherited.

If Jay Jacobs ever got the sack (like that's going to happen ) I would welcome Vandy's AD with open arms

Only thing is I feel action needs to be taken on Kevin Stallings but that's a thread for another day

Our AD David Williams actually makes $2.5 million, quite a bit more than the next closet AD in the country. That being said he also has several legal advising roles within the university as well.

it's not a huge deal, if you look at the coaches in the sec right now most of them hailed from the north.

I will never say a bad thing about what Franklin did for football. He brought an energy that, even if it was a "perfect storm", was absolutely needed. He changed the mindset. The Vandy coach mold would have tempered expectations by saying things like "it's only a few good years. We're still a ways off." While probably true, It's not going to energize a fan base or recruits. Franklin brought that energy. I just wish he'd gone out the right way, so I could only say good things in all facets.

Good hire by Vandy, looks like a players coach who already knows how to recruit that caliber of player to a University like Stanford or VU. Nice pick up Doreontheplains, where ever your at brosan

Because you obviously can't be a good coach unless you have done it in the SEC don't you know anything? Saban sucked until he won at LSU, Miles sucked til he did the same.

The fact that TN actually has a staff that is going to stay together, will actually develop our players for the first time since the early 2000's and is recruiting top 5 talent is not good for the SEC East.

It is not a question of north and south but of east and west. If Saban and Miles both spent time in OH they had interaction to places in driving distance to OH - The B1G, ACC, and SEC - while had they been on the west coast flying would be the only alternative. If you can drive to TN vs fly to CO for a recruit of equal value you will generally get the closer kid if everything else is constant.

Look how many of the most fruitful M basketball coaching trees come from either KS or IN. In football the Woody Hays tree produced Lou Holtz, Urban Meyer, Les Miles, Bo Pelini, and others who coached in the SEC with success.
