Not exactly the same. UM was already a successful head coach. I see what you are saying though.

The risk with him was Southern experience. The risk for Mason is that and can he be a HC and succeed at a place like Vandy.

This is the best part of his resume.

Not sure where you're going with this.

Stanford never plays the SEC schools. Last time I remember Stanford playing an SEC team was Georgia back in 1978 in a 3 point bowl win in TX. Think about that.

Jimmy Carter was still president
The DJIA was around 800 and gold hit an all time high of 200 dollars
New house was about 55K and and average wage was about 17K
Eggs were about 50 cents per dozen and good steak was about 2 bucks a pound

I always hear how good Stanford is in football yet until they play the top SEC schools it is just a lot of talk.

Dude the SEC is overrated.

Stanford could hang with the SEC on any given Saturday.

He's just pointing out his lack of Southern experience. The total lack does not bother me. A good coach is a good coach. He'll need some Southern staff (possibly some of the 4 holdovers left) to recruit.

it will take time for a new staff to build up recruiting in the high schools and unlike perception, Vanderbilt football still draws the vast majority of it's players from inside the SEC footprint. (maybe now Missouri is in the footprint Vandy will have some MO recruits). This will be a problem for a guy from the west coast with no recruiting ties to the east.

2013 Vanderbilt roster

SEC footprint (with ACC overlap in FL, GA, and SC)
TN (21) .... xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
GA (21) .... xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
FL (14) ..... xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
AL (10) ..... xxxxxxxxxx
TX (04) ..... xxxx
LA (03) ..... xxx
KY (02) .... xx
MS (02) .... xx
SC (01) .... x
Total = 78

ACC + B1G footprint
OH (04) .... xxxx
IL (04) ...... xxxx
VA (03) .... xxx
NJ (02) .... xx
IN (02) ..... xx
CT (01) .... x
RI (01) ..... x
NY (01) .... x
PA (01) .... x
MD (01) .... x
Total = 20

PAC + B12 footprint
CA (04) .... xxxx
CO (02) .... xx
OK (01) .... x
Total = 7

Total roster with conference primarily on east coast = 98 players or 93.33%
Total roster with conference primarily on west coast = 7 players or 6.67%

You do realize coaches make connections once they take a job

Saban didn't have connections LA when he was at MSU

Miles didn't have SEC ties while at OSU

And the list could go on

Both were east of the Mississippi and had exposure to playing SEC schools. If this guy was coming from Oregon who at least plays SEC schools that is a bit different then coming from one that does not.

This guy has pretty much spent his entire life west of the Mississippi (almost exclusively in the far west) from high school, through college, and now during his tenure in coaching.

I can assure you no 17 year old kid gives a damn about this.

Not saying it would, but the guy is coming from recruiting from a land full of west coast granola folks to recruiting the bible belt. That is a pretty big jump in his lifestyle and comfort zone. I am guessing it may take some adjustment and just possibly he decides it is not for him if he can not break into recruiting this territory fairly soon.

And much of that was brought by Franklin's NE ties. 20 out of 105 is roughly 1/5 of the roster. That's a significant piece of the roster.

Congrats Vanderbilt! He should be able to keep the momentum going for y'all......the talent Franklin leaves in the program is miles better than what it was when he came in, and coming off B2B 9-win seasons means the team will want to keep winning going forward...

I think we'll look a lot like Stanford next year. The losses of Matthews, Krause, and ACS while both running backs being upcoming juniors will turn into a run-heavy offense.

Yea that talent is really going to scare our top 5 class! Anchored Down

The remnant of our recruits are all SEC caliber. We rank so low because of quantity, not quality. And we will rectify those numbers in the next years recruiting class when we sign a huge class and the Big Orange will be compelled to sign a much smaller class.

Look forward to seeing you on our turf this year.

Big talk from a dumpster fire of a program that hasn't had a winning season since 2009. Try beating Vanderbilt for a change before you recite Butch Jones' "Maxims" before home games.

Amen. I like your style.

Looking at his experience I have no idea if he's gonna make a good HC or not. Too many questions there. However, he doesn't give off the douchebag vibe Franklin did and that alone is a huge upgrade.
