Dude could be like Ellis Johnson. Just not made to be a HC. Great DC, not a great HC. Different skill sets required at the top. No dishonor in that at all.
Mason also had the misfortune to take a job at a weaker school in what has been one of the toughest years ever in the SEC.

So they're going to give him one year? That seems counter-productive for a school like Vandy.
This.
They arguably have a difficult enough time head football coaches as it is, giving short leashes only makes it an even more undesirable destination.
I feel for them, since I don't think Mason is HC material, but they made this bed after hiring a defensive-minded coordinator. They have to give him another year or they're going to have to make another fallback hire.

Vandy was down 14 points to Missouri with like 2 minutes left and had a 4th and long from their own 5.
Mason punted and the announcers rightfully tore into him for basically quitting on the game.
Sure, it's a near hopeless situation, but you could hypothetically convert the 4th, you could hypothetically end up scoring, and could hypothetically get an onsides kick.
It's a ridiculous long shot, but it's happened before.
They said he was trying to "pretty up" a loss and that not going for it was extra dumb because Pinkel is just going to take knees and run the clock out anyway if you turn it over on downs at the 5 and even if he doesn't, who cares, losing by 21 is the same as losing by 14.
This guy is a trainwreck.

This was going to be a terrible year for Vandy regardless of who was coaching - that's why Franklin got out while the getting was good. He knew damn well all the talent was graduating/gone and that all he had for the next year were a bunch of redshirts and a few ballers on D but only a few.
Add in Mason deciding to switch to a 3-4 and it's a disaster waiting to happen but switching now as opposed later is smart. A bad season was in the works from the start and that much isn't Mason's fault.
However, the way it's unfolded and HOW BAD it's been is his fault. His QB management is just one example of the way he's managed things that make him look far more at fault for the entire situation than the terrible talent/bad circumstances he inherited. His incompetence has made what was likely a bad season look even worse. He's lost and half the time his team is lost.

Sunday though, he cut off the coaches show. Because of Vanderbilt's losing record he has made the decision to not let Vanderbilt media and fans access the show. This will not set well with the Vanderbilt media.
IMO this is indicative of a coaching change coming soon. This will be the last year Derek Mason coaches at Vanderbilt.
I've heard this buzz and it will show great moxy from our AD. We've been so competitive to fall so soon. Getting beat as a smaller school in the SEC is going to happen, but this season is laughable.

They didn't post it because he refused to do it
You know this based on what?
Mason is actually the first Vandy coach since Bobby Johnson to have a coach's show on TV.

Yes he is, in 5 years but why didn't he do it this week?

The fact that he didn't film episode 8 of the coaches show.

Yes but you're assuming that it was his decision to make.

long shot of Mizzou muffing the punt catch, too.

I don't think they'd fire him after one year but yea.......that's a bad sign. Sounds like some Larry Porter at Memphis type shite

absolutely. The media's job is to interview the coaches. Do you think Joe Fisher called Derek Mason and said well, sorry coach I can't do it this week?

Tell me why you would retain Mason after THIS year? We've been as competitive as ever under Franklin, Won a baseball College World Series and now look what is happening?

Believe me, I've been watching this train wreck since game 1. You think I'm going to let anything get past Old Mud?
