I think the decline of the B1G has many facets.

1) Population shift. No explanation necessary.

2) Exposure. The B1G used to receive the lions share of exposure and hype, now the SEC has caught up.

3) Facilities/Arms Race. While many B1G schools have larger athletic budgets, they didn't invest wisely in new or updated facilities. Now with the SEC catching up in $, it will be harder for the B1G to keep up in the arms race. Obviously OSU, UM, PSU etc. could invest a billion each tomorrow and close the gap very quickly.

4) Realignment. The B1G did ok adding Nebraska, but adding Maryland and Rutgers will not help them in football. They should have whored themselves out and went all in for Notre Dame. Nebraska, ND, and UCONN (for hoops and NYC market) are who they should have added.

5) Bonehead coaching hires. Other than Urban Meyer, who in the B1G is a Tier 1 HC? That's it...no one.

The B1G is capable of fixing their woes quickly, they just need to get creative and learn how to navigate the new paradigm.

This population thing isnt as big of a deal as some make it out to be. Ohio is a top 5-8 football talent state in the country! You could make the argument that hispanics are the reason for the growth in the South. Michigan is the only state in which the population decreased in the north. So i dont get where this stigma comes from.

Population shift doesn't automatically mean states are shrinking. For most it means their growth has become either very small and/or stagnant compared to states in the South and West. It's a very real thing regardless of if you want to believe it or not.

With MAC schools getting so much exposure on ESPN w/MACtion these days the population shifts absolutely matter a great deal. Now instead of ALL the talent going to the Big 10 many of the lower ends guys are choosing to take their talents to the MAC instead of being trapped as backups in the Big 10. Couple that w/the Southern schools from the SEC to the Sun Belt keeping the talent home and the Big 10 is trapped in a talent drain.

and PS, while Hispanic population growth is part of some Southern state increases, it is not the only factor. Never mind that plenty of Hispanic kids also play football down here. Sorry but they aren't all soccer/baseball lovers. Not by a long shot.

The Hispanic kids do like football, however they aren't any good at it.

This is why high school teams from the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas never win the state championship. As soon as they get to the regional finals and have to play a team from San Antonio or north they are fricked.

So i dont get where this stigma comes from. As a B1G fan, i'll say this....who is Indiana's coach? Who is Minnesota's coach? Who is Illinois coach? Who is Purdue's coach? Hell, who is Wisconsin's coach? The B1G makes the most $ and yet isnt willing to pay for quality coaches OR recruiting. Its that simple! Jim Delaney needs to make these schools accountable for their desireless efforts in football. Just look at basketball...Izzo, Matta, Bielein, Bo Ryan, Crean, Chris Collins....amazing basketball coaches! Thus the reason why the B1G has been so good in basketball. The B1G has awesome venues and fanbases to attract talent, that isnt debateable, but yet there is no point of emphasis on hiring quality coaches. That HAS to change. I think the pressure is mounting on these universities from the entire region to get it fixed. Just my two cents.

It's this x 1000 the rest of the speculation on this thread is some of the dumbest shite I have ever read.

The B10 is responsible for the B10 decline if it was their decision to not partner with ESPN. The B10's commissioner has been behind the times for years.

There wouldn't be a SECN, PAC12 Network or the LHN if the B1G had stayed with ESPN.

When B1G was in negotiations for a new contract with ESPN, the head of the flagship low-balled him and told Delaney that he could either take what they (ESPN) offered or go start his own network. He did and the financial success of the B1G network opened the door for the HUGE contracts that followed.

So you're saying that none of the other networks would have come about if it hadn't been for Delaney and the b-10?...really? I guess there'd be no such thing as cars without Henry Ford (hint: there were cars before Ford like there were sports networks before the B1G network).
