There are plenty of good recruits in NJ, Penn. Ohio and Michigan.

The B1G chose to stay with tradition instead of evolve. They still push the "academic" angle (which has little to do with athletics) because it gives some boosters warm fuzzy feelings.

I think a reluctance to change is also a part of their decline.

Remember, until the Mulligan Bowl the B1G and PAC12 were dead set against a playoff and all about their relationship with the Rose Bowl. (And all the bucks they were getting from the Disney/ABC/ESPN mafia)

After the Mulligan Bowl, the handwriting was clear, if there was not a change, how soon would two more SEC teams be playing?

And now, it looks like the B1G will be sitting on the sidelines....

The Big 10 decline is a good analogy for the decline of the Midwest in general. I know Chicago is a world class place but outside of there, it seems like a rusting hulk of what it used to be. That economic reality has to rub off on the major football conference in the region. It's also cold and not a sexy destination for a young recruit coming out of high school today. Southern California, South Florida, even the Pacific Northwest is more attractive to young recruits today. So a host of factors is involved.

Very true ... and probably the biggest factor in the overall B1G decline. I could not agree more. I would think most intelligent people would agree with you as well.

If there are a million black residents in Mississippi making up 40% of the population, and a million black residents in Michigan making up 5% of the population, I'm not sure the advantage is so great.

The difference there is that the blacks in Michigan that come from poor academic schools in Detroit, Flint, etc aren't getting into Michigan/Michigan State if they do poor in school. They go to Central/Eastern/Western Michigan.

Same can go for Illinois. Come from a poor performing school in that state, Illinois is not going to bend the rules to get you into their school. You'll go to SIU, NIU, Illinois State, etc.

Lets say in Louisiana/Mississippi/Alabama, the blacks that come from poor performing school will still get into those SEC schools as long as they are really good in football. Then the SEC schools will make sure they stay eligible. There's no way a lot of those athletes that come from bad schools are all of a sudden making the grades at Flagship schools in the south. While their peers have to go to Grambling, Southern, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State, Alabama State, etc. And look up the stats, the south have some of the worst schools for blacks, blacks are behind in regards to education.

Gary Danielson believes the Big 10 choosing NOT to partner with ESPN and forming their own network has drastically decreased their exposure leading to a decline in recruits.

Just noticed how I don't see many B1G football replays on ESPNU, ESPN Classic, etc. Hell I'm seeing more and more SEC games on all ESPN network. Big 12,ACC, and Pac 12 are also declining in coverage. ESPN is ruining college football

If I were an athlete, I'd choose the SEC because of the coverage. SEC turns athletes into superstars, get more coverage than NFL players.

No they dont. They didnt not get any BCSCG money the last 8 years, the SEC did. They did not get multiple BCS games money, the SEC did.

to all the dumb frickers that say its about funding, you should shut up and do some research. Last year the big 10 had 3 of the top 5 revenue schools (WISCONSIN, OSU, UM) and 6 of the top 17(Iowa, Minn, MSU).

Money is not the problem. There last school ranked was maryland(#47 and ahead of Miss State) and they were in the ACC last year. of the big 10 teams that got big 10 payouts the lowest ranked in revenue was purdue at #38 which is ahead of schools like miss state, arizona state, clemson, arizona, virginia tech, and others.

Funding is not the problem, not their reluctance to spend that money on things that matter is a different issue all together.

here is the LINK to prove all of this. :spank:

It's a race thing. Fact.

It's not racist to say that, just observant.

Yup. South have more rural blacks, North have Urban blacks. Rural blacks play football, Urban blacks play basketball.

I can remember ESPN Classic had some story on about a high school football team in NYC, it was a disgrace., They didn't have a home stadium, no where to practice, had to get athletes from multiple schools to form a team, etc. I was thinking they'd get worked by a 1a or 2a school in the South.

Hell I've never heard of a HS football team in Chicago, Detroit, Philly, etc being good. Unless they are a private school or academy.

You left out unions. And the mob.

And the job loss that came about because of those.

Yeah, you only get into trouble if you go Jimmy the Greek and try to rationalize why. We don't need to know why. It just is.

Demographic shifts are responsible for the decline of the Big 10.

What used to be the manufacturing heart of the country (back when we still made things here and a factory worker could earn a strongly middle class wage and support a family by himself) is mow a rusted-out shell, aside from Chicago.

With the jobs went the people. Americans are mobile, and they left the midwest. Graduates of tOSU, Michigan, etc. don't stay there, they get jobs in other parts of the country, which accelerates the problem.

Not the same.
Agreed. The B10 is responsible for the B10 decline if it was their decision to not partner with ESPN. The B10's commissioner has been behind the times for years.

This population thing isnt as big of a deal as some make it out to be. Ohio is a top 5-8 football talent state in the country! You could make the argument that hispanics are the reason for the growth in the South. Michigan is the only state in which the population decreased in the north. So i dont get where this stigma comes from. As a B1G fan, i'll say this....who is Indiana's coach? Who is Minnesota's coach? Who is Illinois coach? Who is Purdue's coach? Hell, who is Wisconsin's coach? The B1G makes the most $ and yet isnt willing to pay for quality coaches OR recruiting. Its that simple! Jim Delaney needs to make these schools accountable for their desireless efforts in football. Just look at basketball...Izzo, Matta, Bielein, Bo Ryan, Crean, Chris Collins....amazing basketball coaches! Thus the reason why the B1G has been so good in basketball. The B1G has awesome venues and fanbases to attract talent, that isnt debateable, but yet there is no point of emphasis on hiring quality coaches. That HAS to change. I think the pressure is mounting on these universities from the entire region to get it fixed. Just my two cents.
