The problem is some of these students would have ended up at smaller colleges within Alabama

I think these are mostly kids that 10 years ago would have gotten in at Alabama under normal circumstances. The growth is almost all in out-of-state students. In-state numbers aren't growing much at all.

Kind of already where they are. They now bring in more out of state kids than in state kids each year. The change in out of state % compared to 2005 is staggering.

We are growing but that isn't really a big deal because we have a shitload of space. The campus is massive with plenty of room to grow outward (west campus and beyond.) Texas can't do that with the limited space in Austin.

Our enrollment size scares the college ranking sites, but it doesn't really matter if we can grow and maintain the same value for graduates. I know I picked a&m for the payoff of the aggie network after I got out.

But there are plans to continue to grow, and if the only way to do that and maintain certain quality numbers is to bring in out of state students, there lies the problem. The magic number is the 50%. I do not think there is another Southern State namesake University with those high numbers. They will have to attract more quality instate students or lower the acceptance standards. If the numbers become 30/70 or 40/60 the outcry will be too load.

You have a state population that can support that growth. Not so in Alabama.

My theory is that Alabama has become a "hot" school in big cities to apply to. I think a BUNCH of kids from out of state probably apply, and I think a lot of them probably are on the lower edge of the spectrum and aren't admitted.

Not sure about acceptance rates, but a shite ton of suburban Chicago kids have begun attending Bama in recent years. There probably are a lot of dumbasses who apply that don't realize they could be turned away.

I must be getting older though...out of state tuition at LSU was only around $14k when I went there. It was cheaper than going to Illinois as an in-state student.
