Well, to answer your actual question. He is coaching at the Junior College level the last time I looked. I don't really remember how it came out that he was an alcoholic but it partly ruined his career. He was never going to make it has a big time coach though, he tried to run his teams like they were training for the Navy Seals. He had the most success with average kids that worked their butt off.

He had that in a kid like Darius Miller and when he didn't play "hard enough" for his liking due to a fricking concussion he threatened to make him walk miles from the arena to the hotel in the winter (still with a concussion). He told Galloway if he missed part of practice to see his newborn son born that he'd yank his scholarship. And he basically forced Jodie Meeks to play with a sports hernia that was so bad he could barely walk across campus and damn near ruined his career.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I don't think we'll ever know everything that happened but there's been plenty that's come out that suggests he's an utter piece of shite.

Was wildy successful at smaller basketball schools(UTEP, A&M) while being a raging alcoholic and serial coed prowler. Took his hardnosed style to a school like Kentucky and flamed out when the players didn't buy in all the way. Couldn't get it back on track at Texas Tech like he did with A&M and UTEP and the alcohol problems got worse and more public when he wasn't winning.

I was a student when he rebuilt A&M basketball. Still say that if he hadn't left for Kentucky, he'd have a statue or the court named after him by now.

I'm sure there were many kids at Kentucky that were hard workers. My point was more directed at the whole team. He was exposed as soon as he went to a school that recruited highly ranked players. He was no doubt a pos.

A few JUCO transfers and some instate kids were hardly that. Tubby didn't want to get into AAU recruiting (which is what did him in) and Gillispie didn't fair much better.

Ya. Outside of Patterson, Orton and Miller, his recruiting was garbage. I shudder to think what would've happened with his roster going into his 3rd year.

Yeah I never understood that. Gilliespie was recruiting at a very high level when he left A&M. Recall he landed DeAndre Jordan and some other top talent.

It would've been ugly. He's also pretty much the reason Jodie Meeks didn't come back for another season, playing with Wall and Cousins.

I also recall hearing that Meeks threatened to not go back out for the 2nd half of the Tennessee game where he broke Issel's single scoring record for a UK player (53). Apparently Gillispie wanted no part of being "shown up" by Meeks and lost his shite with him in the locker room over it.

The team also threatened to not play the NIT game in Memorial that season. Eventually when Patterson's Mom got wind of the crazy shite that was going on she told Barnhart that they were all going to quit if he didn't do something.

Well, aside from still being my hero, I think he is coaching at some JUCO now.

My first year was Melvin Watkins' winless (in conference) final season. You could run and slide down the seats in Reed Arena during games. My senior year Billy had taken us to the Sweet 16. Stop and think about that. Seriously! Billy Gillispie is a god-like entity.

Billy Clyde is best at turning turds into diamonds. He demands total personal loyalty, absolute devotion to the game and the team, and requires his players to engage in extreme PT to achieve maximum physical endurance. His players at A&M were the kind of guys who could've stormed the beaches at Normandy.

That doesn't work with special cupcake coddled one-and done blue chips like the kind Kentucky gets. Those kids know they're going to the NBA after a year anyway, so they have no reason to buy in. Millennials, especially spoiled entitled princesses like Kentucky players, just don't have the kind of fortitude it takes to thrive under Billy Gillispie. He needs more humble stock in order to achieve the buy-in he needs to re-build his players as men.

That, and he's a drunk.
