The bomb isn't being dropped on college sports; it's directed at K-12 education. The gap between what these kids know upon HS graduation and what they should know when entering an institution of higher education is growing larger.
The fact that these kids are functionally illiterate is a societal problem; not a collegiate one. It is not the charge of IHEs to teach basic reading and writing.

The real elitist crock of shite is Texas, who has an atrocious situation going on, talking about being "proud" that they don't do things like those other places.
Meanwhile, Ole Miss, which is pretty universally accepted as being very inferior to Texas academically, is doing much better with their athletes.
And then, of course, there's the massively hypocritical Big Ten, where neither of their big name programs are willing to share data but they'll be the very first to talk about how the SEC is shameful with our athletes.

High Schools benefit from good athletics, just like colleges. They don't want to hurt their programs by failing their best players. Also, they don't want to look like a shitty school because they can't graduate people on time.
The world needs ditch diggers and football players. Not everybody is smart, like me.

Any institution that gave Vincent "Radio" Young a degree is full of shite. Period. All credibility goes out the window.

So, why don't universities just offer a "football" degree course?
Because when they are one day physically incapable of playing the game, what would they be left with? At least with a Housing degree they have some knowledge or skill set that specializes them in the workforce and offers them a life after football.

They are learning FOOTBALL ONLY.
well okay but if that's the case then you've removed the main argument as to why they shouldn't be paid.

Coaching?

You type that in a way that suggests I didn't purposely do that?

Successful coaches read and write.
Intelligibly.
Intelligibly.

So is it CNN's point that these kids would be better served without the opportunity to play football at a major university? I suppose they could always get a job at McDonald's.

And, back to the shitasticness of K-12 education, those illiterate football players would then be required to teach at least one class to high schoolers in order for them to also coach.

Athletes that don't make it in the NFL end up right back where they came from. At least with football, they begin to understand the need to learn. See what I am getting at?

I agree.
Also, who exactly gets hurt by letting these guys go to college and play football?
Is this tiny minority of the college enrollment hurting other college graduates? (seems like almost everyone is a college graduate now anyways)
I'm just not seeing a victim here.

Why does coaching always tie back to teaching? It could actually save money to schools to pay a coach what he is worth. Some of the shittiest "teachers" I ever had were coaches. It's a joke.

You have hit on the very core of this discussion and why people have a problem with it.
It's the core of all communism/socialism.
Jealousy!!! Envy!!!
These nerdy little shits that never got any pussy in HS are leading the charge to destroy the cool-kid jocks.

I had a history teacher that was also the basketball coach in 8th grade. He would yell at the class until his eyes were bloodshot and then some every single day

Not exactly.
But I'm on prescription pharmaceuticals.
It's likely my fault.
I'm a professor.
I've had multiple athletes take my courses--at multiple universities.
The stories I could tell ....
This issue isn't going to disappear.
And it isn't limited to athletes.
This is a topic to be discussed for hours/days/months.
Over much scotch.
