True! I'm surprised you mentioned that. Just google "Mormons, Missouri" and read the plethora of information related to their experience here. Missouri was supposed to be their Garden of Eden...Missouri was supposed to be Zion.
If it wasn’t for the Mormon War of the late-1830s, Missouri (not Utah) would probably be the Mormon capital of the world. In 1838 and 1839, following an “extermination” order issued by Gov. Lilburn Boggs, 8,000 to 10,000 Mormons were driven out of Missouri. Boggs had declared Mormons in “open and avowed defiance” of the state’s laws and of having made war upon the people of Missouri.
“The Mormons must be treated as enemies,” Boggs declared on Oct. 27, 1838, “and must be exterminated or driven from the State if necessary for the public peace; their outrages are beyond all description.”
Three days later, a unit of the state militia killed 17 men and boys, all members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in the Haun’s Mill Massacre.
Today, only 56,000 of the approximate 4.7 million Mormons in the United States live in Missouri. But Mormons still believe that Missouri plays an important role in the church.
Independence, MO is a “centerplace” of the City of Zion, from which the teaching of Christ will come upon his return, said Helen Penfield of the Columbia Mormon Stake.
“The Mormons came to Missouri with the idea that they were going to stay here,” Penfield said. “They called it Zion, but they were kicked out of Zion.”

To piggyback off of what he said, it was actually legal to kill Mormons in the state of Missouri up until the 1970s

I'm pleasantly surprised to see this thread is still going! Great thread! I've learned a lot from reading it.

The Mormon War was an interesting chapter in Missouri history. Also, Iowa and Missouri were involved in a couple of violent border disputes around the same time. Good stuff.

No. Murder isn't legal in the U.S.

murder is generally a state law, with the exceptions of killing judges, federal agents, federal land, etc. however, uncle sam would have had the authority under the 1870 US Force Act to bring charges of depriving Mormom's of their civil rights... a la how the FBI/DOJ finally brought to justice those in Mississippi reponsibile for lynching Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner.

Well, on the Missouri books. One of those old laws that never got changed. Like in St. Louis (city) it's also illegal for 4 or more women to live together - they assume it's a brothel.
Most states have some of those old laws dating back to the 1800s that just never got changed, but were superseded by other state and/or Federal laws.

Unite,
Yes, up to the 1970s. Read SEMO's post. Makes it very clear why it was "legal" (use that term loosely) until the 1970s...

Gotcha. I understand outdated laws. It's illegal to spit on the sidewalk or wear high heels in downtown Birmingham btw

then you've probably broken both of those laws numerous times.

In Missouri, it's illegal to call a person's rear end a "chocolate fountain". I broke that law just last week.
