being 4-0 against A&M last 4 games? Shutting down your Heisman Winning Savior? Is that what you call a problem? It's cool...I'll wait

I'd pick Chavis as my game day DC and player developer, but Steele as the recruiter. It depends on what I needed most.
It's kind of like Alabama fans and Cristobal/Stoutland. After Stoutland's tenure, the cupboard was bare for oline talent. He probably can coach better than Cristobal, but we need Cristobal's recruiting prowess right now.

Very solid So what would you do if your D sucked and your recruiting was trending down?

Let's see what both can do with the talent we have in BR before we make any claims to whose best. I do know so far that Steele and O are whipping that fat arse in recruiting which is no shock.

A&M upgraded with Chavis. They will do better now, but Chavis won't achieve what he did at A&M with LSU. Pretending everyone didn't make a good choice is foolish, Aggie, Tiger, or otherwise.
LSU needed to move forward from Chavis. A big part of Chavis was his weak front seven. We were soft up the middle. It's a fact. The reason Chavis was an expert on beating teams that attack the edges with the spread was because we put five to six of the best damn DBs in the country out on the field at a time against teams like that. The reason that worked so well was in no small part because of Coach Raymond.
Earlier posters said Chavis kept us in the Bama games, rather than blowing them at the end, comparing their scores against us to their average. LSU defenses are stupposed to cut average scores in half. It's what top SEC defenses do. We grind out TOP and keep the D fresh and while giving the opponent less time to score in general. Our offense had won the game for us multiple times in 12, 13, and 14. If you consistently can't stop a two minute drill in your own house when Conference/National Championship hopes are on the line, you shouldn't be playing for LSU. Once every few years is understandable. But every year is a problem that needs to be fixed.
Maybe our play calling will take a step back. Steele has reasons to be doubted in the playcalling department, though I'm cautiously optimistic that 7 years with Saban and Smart taught him plenty. But honestly, the play calling under Chavis was never genius level. It was good, but not great. But now we have some of the best position coaches in their respective areas in the country, making that front seven stout again, and the we stay DBU as long as we have Raymond (Frick Florida). The trade is worth it for us, and the Ags.
A&M will be a lot better in defense in the next few years now, but they don't have the recruiting and position coach quality we do, so they still won't be as good as us defensively. But the obvious upgrade at DC will make them a legitamite threat to the West in a couple years (maybe as early as next year). Everyone upgraded. Talk about something else. Please.
TLDR, LSU fans melt, the Decline, Ags are ghey, blah blah, whatever usual SEC RANT narrative you want to follow.

Chavis. Better track record. Sent more players to the NFL. Better ranked defenses. Albeit Tennessee and LSU are premiere programs who can recruit star talent. Baylor and Clemson.. Stepping stones.
However LSU is apparently a stepping stone. Whatevs. We'll see in November

Why don't we wait to see what the stats are at the end of the season. We really don't know what either will do. Steele has never had this good of talent to work with and Chavis has never had this bad of talent to work with.

If we would have kept Chavis and A&M hired Steele and you posed this question, rantards would have laughed themselves into asphyxiation and then burned your house down upon resuscitation. Chavis is the answer.

They both suck. Especially Chavis.

All I know is that LSU fans were melting like an ice cream cone in August when Steele was hired, and now he is apparently tGOAT. But to be fair, all fanbases do this when they have to rationalize a hire.

At this point, both teams needed a change. Under Chavis, LSU lost 7 games on either the last drive of the game or on the last play of the game, not counting at least one OT, too. Which translates to the offense having put up enough points to win the game up to said last drive. Steele was hired by God himself twice, and as He is the best evaluator in college football, Steele must be good, too. The name Third & Chavis did not come from LSU. UT gave it to him and for good reasons.
