Sorry, but you can’t defend the sorry state of tackling in this. On every play, you see defenders launch head-first and helmet down to make hits rather then tackles. That whole technique needs to be legislated out of the game as it’s an extroidinarily dangerous play for the defender and person being hit.

It's how the rule is written. It states that any question of targeting is a foul.

SBnation link
Basic rule:
quote:

No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul.

The link has the additional notes. I hope it gets changed to give the refs a little more leeway in cases where it wasn't deliberate.

Watch this play

How do you tackle this guy? Low man wins contact. What exactly is a defender supposed to do when the ball carrier lowers his helmet (which happens on nearly every play)?

I don't think ball carriers should be allowed to use the crown of their helmet, but it isn't impossible to tackle a guy that does.

It's not impossible, but it is impossible to ensure you make that tackle without getting your helmet involved.

A RB bending at the waist and leading with his helmet has eliminated any target above the waist without getting the helmet involved. So you either A: stick your head in there and make the tackle or B: dive for his feet.

I have no idea. It seems like if they decide there is no targeting, it's not even a foul. How about the late hit on Miami's QB yesterday that knocked his helmet off? They didn't even want to review that. I think it's just another way for the officials to be able to influence the outcome of a game.

Go watch the replay of the AU/OM game yesterday. Classic targeting.

Targeting for a defenseless player should only be applied when it's something like what that Bears player did to DeVante Adams a couple weeks ago. When a player leads with the crown of their helmet but is just trying to make a tackle, that should not be a penalty.

A targeting call should be like the unsportsmanlike penalty: the first one in the game results in a 15 yard penalty with a warning to the player but no ejection.

The second one in the game draws a 15 yard penalty and the player is ejected.

Agreed, but unless the rule is changed they are not enforcing it by the letter of the law.

They are enforcing it by the letter of the law. It doesn't apply to just defenseless players. And as someone else just posted, it specifically says if in doubt it's a foul.

It's a shitty rule that needs some serious rewriting/retooling but it's still being enforced appropriately.

He almost killed Stephen Roberts. I was very surprised Roberts was able to hold on to the ball. Respect for taking that hit.

It's not against the rules to get your helmet involved. You just can't lead with the crown of your helmet there.

THAT was textbook targeting and I have no problem with that call at all.

The targeting rule is a result of leftist assholes and their willing accomplices in the media trying to take down the most popular sport in America. Bunch of pussies.

It's frustrating as hell to turn on a game that doesn't even have to involve a team I give a shite about and watch the idiotic targeting calls hold up the game and see players kicked out for doing their job just so the powers that be can satisfy the leftist pussies by showing they are policing the sport in a way the liberals approve of. There is a big difference between trying to decapitate a defenseless punt returner waiting on the ball vs the bullshite that gets routinely called as targeting in games. The rule should be changed and only the most blatant illegal blows to the head to truly defenseless players should even be considered as targeting and the result should be nothing more than a 15 yard penalty. No automatic ejections.
