hell, Moe's BBQ is tons better than Jim n Nick's, and it is still slightly above average bbq

Both are average BBQ places IMO. The best is Saws BBQ in Homewood(IMO). Dreamland is a close second.

The sides at Jim N Nick's are really good. Not good enough for me to recommend them, but still good.

Saw's, Miss Myra's, and Rusty's are the best BBQ I've had in the area, though Rusty's is a bit out if the way in Leeds.

Niki's West

Is fantastic but in a creepy area.

If y'all go here, please be aware of your surroundings

Also, since you're staying at Shoal Creek, I'd recommend Grey Bar, Back Nine,
and Cafe Firenze

Bump.

We are in flight to Birmingham right now.

Anything going on tonight (Halloween) that we should consider?

Highlands-the bar side. Better call ahead to get a seat-5 Points South

Bottega (Cafe side- you can order off the restaurant menu if you prefer)- 5 Points

Hot & Hot Fish Club- 5 Points. Very expensive and the portion sizes are skimpy but you cannot find a better tasting meal

The Garage- a very cool dive. Walking distance from Bottega or Hot & Hot. On a 1 way not the easiest to find. Cash only. Great sandwiches and ice cold beer.

Ocean-5 Points

Dram/Avo- Mtn Brook

Jinsei (killer sushi)- Homewood

Surin- numerous locations. All same menu. Mtn Brook-Crestline Village. 5 Points. Highway 280.

Sol Y Luna- Tapas and killer margaritas- Lakeview

El Barrio- Upscale mexican- downtown

Saw's- hands down the best pulled pork BBQ in the city- Homewood and Saw's Soul Kitchen with bigger menu in Avondale next to Avondale Brewery.

Ollie Irene-Mtn Brook Village

Hopefully you get the chance to play Shoal Creek while you're there. Beautiful golf course in a beautiful setting and an annual Top 60 course annually.

One place not mentioned that I would definitely check out before you leave is Vulcan Park. It's just up the hill from Five Points and has an elevator to an observation deck with amazing views of downtown B'ham. Definitely worth checking out. As for Halloween activities, ask a local if anything is going on at Sloss Furnaces which is a notoriously old haunted Steel mill/furnace.

you have to go to one of frank stitt's restaurants...bottega, highland's bar & grill.

hot & hot fish club is also excellent and in a unique venue. the building used to be a bar called the upside down plaza.

I don't understand the love for the garage. It has a neat courtyard I guess but there's no draft beer and it is cash only. If you want a simple pub without dipshit bartenders and decent draft selection head to Dave' (5 points). If you like bar food with your drinks, Black Market is across the street.

Nikki's west is perfectly safe. There's a drug treatment facility next door but its locked down at night (it's well staffed and a lot of Nikki's West employees are actually from that program), the rest is mostly industrial. I still wouldn't recommend it for anyone visiting just because its too far out from Birmingham. It's not worth the hassle of finding it.

I am not going to read through this whole thread so it may have been posted but The Bright Star in Bessemer is well worth the drive. Really neat place with great food. Bright Star

Anywhere in Hoover would be a good pick. If you go into city of Birmingham stay away from 5 Points. It's really just a good idea to stay out of Birmingham after dark.
