Recent memory? Darius Winston.....

He was a 5* DB out of West Helena,Arkansas.... He barely played, IDK even know if he ever started a game.

On Tony Van Zant at Mizzou:

He was the Parade high school player of the year if memory serves. Probably the best (highest rated) recruit ever gotten by Mizzou and he was considered the top recruit in the country - about 1986 or so.

He blew his knee out playing in a high school all-star game, not even a game or practice at Mizzou. Stayed on and got his degree, with minimal playing time. Coached in Michigan for awhile, I think he may be coaching at Lincoln University in Jefferson City,MO.

I can't really call him a bust though due to the reason being injury.

DGB: probably fair, but sophomore season was pretty dang good. Too bad he's an absolute idiot. Good luck with the Titans, but his comments lead me to believe he hasn't learned how to be responsible for his own actions yet.

That's right on tvz, thank you. It's been a while since I have talked about him. I believe you are correct that he is coaching in Jeff City. Very good person, damn shame what happened to him.

Regarding DGB, I agree his sophomore season was very good, but due to all the headaches and perception problems he caused the coaching staff, the problems he caused to other students, as well as the expectations he had coming in, he still definitely qualifies for bust status in my opinion.

Do off the field incidents count as busts? I usually think of busts as overly hyped guys and their performance never matched their hype regardless of who they were out of uniform. But for me would be Russell Shepard.

Second place is Leonard Fournette because he hasn't won the heisman twice yet

I'm always skeptical of a 5* coming out of Arkansas. It's not always that the competition is bad, but for whatever reason they just don't translate well to the college game.

Winston, Tenpenny, Frazier, Mustain.

There are Exceptions too like McFadden.

Dyer was great his freshman year, but a thuggish dumbass over all.

It just seems Arkansas 5 stars flame out much more than other states. Possibly because there are so few of them if any most years.

Crowell has to be one of the tops for UGA.

SEC Freshman of the Year annnnnnnnnnd he's gone.

Obviously talented, too, given that he's made it to the NFL and played a significant amount for the Browns.

To think that 2012-2013 could have featured Crowell, Gurley, and Marshall. That could have been nasty.

24/7 had him as one to start. I remember when he committed to alabama he was getting his 5th then or shortly before.

It was right around when that video of his highschool's workout routine hit the web.

I've always disagreed with this line of thinking. Obviously, we wanted so much more from him because of his tremendous potential. But the guy came in as a TFr and rushed for roughly 850 yards. There's a few games that year we probably don't win without IC.

He certainly didn't live up to his hype, but when I think "bust" I think of people who didn't do ANYTHING noteworthy at all. He at least played pretty well in the year he was here.

When I think bust I think of the marquise elmore, brandon miller, albert hollis (although that's really not his fault due to injury, I'm just saying), blake barnes/christian lemays of the world.

Definitely. If not for Marcus Dupree, he would have been the most decorated high school running back in Mississippi history (that includes Walter Payton as a HS running back)

Dupree was one of the original high profile recruits. He was out of Philadelphia High School in Mississippi. Ended up at Oklahoma with a mysterious Trans Am in the 80s.

Was a legit Heisman contender after a breakout freshman season. He went home between Thanksgiving and the Fiesta Bowl and gained 15 lbs. on momma's cooking. Got in Switzer's doghouse, but still ran for 200+ in the Fiesta Bowl. Never really did anything else. Ended up dropping out of Oklahoma.

A few years later, he decided he wanted to play football again - on a whim, just tried out for the New Orleans Breakers and made it - had a decent career going before he broke his leg.

Now he's collecting disability. The Best that Never Was, indeed. No bust bigger in all of college sports. Here's a 6:00 video worth your time if you are interested in busts.

He's not a bust. He was awesome. Just a fricking moron.

Chris Davenport is the most recent I can think of. 5 Star Tackle that did absolutely nothing at LSU.
