I dont see Gus regressing this season.

The defense did, the offense did not. Cupboard was bare in 2012 behind an experienced and thin starting unit. We were blessed to have no injuries.

2013
Losing seniors and maybe most importantly Damontre Moore with no one behind him. We started freshman DE's at 220 lbs and DT's at 250, also with no depth. Defense won't be world beaters this year but we will at least have some bodies.

Right mix of players. It's still Spurrier.

This might have been Gus's most impressive coaching job :

During the 2007 season Malzahn emerged as one of the premier offensive coordinators in the nation, as Tulsa ranked 1st in the nation in total yards per game, ahead of Texas Tech and Hawai?i, and with a more balanced attack than both teams.[7] The Golden Hurricane also ranked 3rd in the nation in passing[8] and led their conference in scoring. Tulsa became the first team in NCAA history to have a 5,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and three 1,000-yard receivers in a single season.[9][10]

After the regular season, Malzahn interviewed for the open position at Arkansas once Nutt resigned in November 2007.[11]

In 2008, Tulsa was again the nation's most prolific attack, leading with nearly 7,980 total yards of offense averaging 570 yards per game.[12] The Golden Hurricane were ranked 2nd in the nation in scoring behind Oklahoma, scoring over 47 points per game.[13] Tulsa not only ranked 2nd in the nation in scoring that year, but finished with the 2nd highest scoring offense in the history of major college football. The offense was also the nation's most balanced attack, ranking 5th in the nation in rushing[14] and 9th in passing.[15] The Tulsa quarterbacks finished 3rd in the nation in passing efficiency, behind only Oklahoma and Texas.[16]

For real though, I could see how the argument could be made that Gus is better. Like I said in the OP, even though I choose Sumlin, it's close.

As someone said earlier Sumlin is better with the passing game and Malzahn with the running game.

Only true passer he has had at AU was Todd, and he was injured most of the year. Cam would have developed into a passer with another year. See what he did at Tulsa with their passing game.

To be honest I don't think you have enough data from either one to accurately judge them.

Sumlin has only been in big boy football for 2 years and he had Manziel, let's see if he can maintain a prolific offense without him.

Malzahn has coached big boy football one year and had a good offense, let's see if he repeat it. Very much like Sumlin, it's difficult to give him too much credit for 2010 considering he had Cam.

If both continue to produce prolific offenses at a high level consistently, then you can crown them offenses gurus.

Both are very good, that being said, I think Gus is the best play caller in college football. (I know, I am biased... but I have heard national gum bumpers say the same thing)

See what Sumlin did at Houston.

Case Keenum as a senior - 5,631 passing yards, 48 passing TDs, 5 Ints.

What about his time at Ark and 4 years running AUs Offense?

Sumlin's Houston beat Tulsa in 2008 70-30. Of course, Malzahn was not the Head Coach.

I think there's no doubt that Spurrier, Sumlin, and gus are the top 3 Offensive minds in the conference, maybe the country.

I think Auburn's def takes a step back this year, will people pin it on malzahn? we'll see.

Sumlin is recruiting well on both of sides of the ball, but seems to be struggling to keep em all on campus.

Spurrier is no longer a top 3 offensive mind in college football, in the 90's he was probably the best, but a long time ago.

No way Spurrier right now is in the conversation with Malzahn, Aumlin, Briles ect.

You are sounding like a huge homer.

Briles is a great offensive mind, but he only played one defense last year, and he lost.

What #'s would Spur, Gus, Sum put up against WVU, tech, baylor, last years texas, iowa state, kansas, kansas state, etc?

Auburn would have scored 70 against texas terrible run d, see BYU.
