Three years ago and people were wondering how Sumlin would do post Keenum. Did pretty well with the next guy.
Just b/c I think Gus is better isn't a slight at
Sumlin. Sumlin is a fine coach.
Gus has just been around in the SEC longer and
he also had a all world QB and proved he could take a DB out of UGA and almost win another BCS...
That's pretty strong.

Malzahn. His offensive numbers with Marshall were almost as good as Sumlin's with JFF. Most of Sumlin's hype came from Houston and they were in the top 10 when he arrived and still 15th when he left. Arkansas State dropped 43 spots when Gus left.
Sumlin is a great OC but I would still take Gus. He has proven he can greatly turn an offense around in year 1.

No one takes into account Auburn had been recruiting at an SEC level,
You also have to take into account that half of those classes aren't on the roster now. You'll understand when you realize how many guys ya'll lost this summer.
It is splitting hairs but you got to go with the guy holding hardware. Gus.

Prob Gus until Summy wins something
plus Gus has had success with different personnel, including QB's
Sumlin could certainly prove something this year though

Sumlin is better at passing, Malzahn is better at running. The offenses are so wildly different the comparison is just about meaningless anyway.

One of his disciples took it over when he left, so that's probably a big reason why. Kingsbury at TT and Holgorsen at WVU are also Sumlin understudies. He has a pretty impressive coaching tree for a younger coach. I agree though, Malzahn has proven more in the SEC as an OC/HC than Sumlin has up to this point

A list of some QBs that Sumlin has coached...
Drew Bledsoe at Washington State, Drew Brees at Purdue, Jason White and Sam Bradford at Oklahoma, Manziel at TAMU and Case Keenum at Houston.

They are both great offensive minds. Gus had Cam, Sumlin had Manzeil. This year will tell the story

Sumlin has been at least partially responsible for Drew Bledsoe, Drew Brees, Sam Bradford, Case Keenum and Johnny Manziel. He has had a top five offense at least once at three different programs as either an OC or HC.

Dick only started the last 5 games of that season or so. Mustain was 8-0 and got yanked the South Carolina game early for throwing a pick. Still think they should have let it ride with Mustain then, but whatever. But he also was coaching 3 NFL running backs and probably one of the most productive triple threats ever. Not saying that 2006 wasn't thanks to Gus, but I don't know how much a set of 3 backs like that come around.

I hate myself for even dignifying this ridiculous question with a response.
Gus turned Chris Todd with his worn out shoulder into a passing machine...
I'm much less impressed with who a guy has coached vs. who he's coached up.

Easily Gus. Sumlin went 8-4 with a QB deemed on level with tebow and newton. Gus had freaking nick Marshall and won the sec....
This question is dumb. Sumlin has done nothing to show he belongs in the sec

Did offense have everything to do with that? Tamu did have a better scoring offense than Auburn last year.
Scoring offense
5.TAMU - 44.2 points per game
12.Auburn - 39.5 points per game

Playing better defenses will do that.

Sumlin scored 21 points against Mizzou. A week later, Gus scored 59.

Petrino made him better than malzahn did. Even without that running game.

Auburn scored 24 against Miss State then TAMU scored 51 against them.
What's your point?
Transitive property is meaningless in college football.
