People who know nothing of Arkansas State should not make these comparisons.
1. The QB coach undr Freeze was Grant Heard. A great receievers coach at OM. The budget for assistants with Freeze was significantly less than what Gus had. Gus had a true QB coach.
2. most of Aplin's 2010 ints were the result of comeback attempts because the defense was not good.
3. The 2012 schedule was not harder than the 2011 schedule. Both had 2 games that were unwinable. Memphis, and an FCS school. After that it was conference games.
4. Freeze never lost a conference game.
5. ASU administration did not let Freeze's assistants coaches coach the bowl game. It was coached by David Gunn and volunteer high school coaches. the next year they had learned and allowed Lashlee and offensive assistants coach with Thompson as the interim HC.
6. Freeze's best RB was Derrick Lawson. Malzahn had Oku.

Both are good OCs,Malzahn runs more.

That is the only mutual game we can go off of right now. Sorry for bringing results into this.

You must have not watched the game. We were -3 in TO ratio and still won. First time in 22 yrs that has happened. Lets no forget we were 3-9 last year. Give it time.

Smart move by hiring Gus's QB. Now the QBs can learn the right way.

Ryan Aplin was recruited in 2009, played under Freeze for two years and Gus for one. He was a already good QB when Gus was buzzing around like a housefly trying to find a place to temporarily light.

Let's see which coach will still be chillin' in 4-5 years. I'll bet it's Freeze.

I would too...and it's not that Gus isn't a really good coach. I don't have anything against Gus. I've followed them both very closely. It's just that Hugh Freeze is better and I've known it since before he was hired at Ole Miss. Plus, the man can flat out recruit.

I would just look at the major accomplishments of both coaches then decide who I thought was better by who accomplished more...

I like freeze but comparing them as OC's I'd go with Gus. Can't really compare as head coach in the SEC til Gus has a 2nd year as well though. That's my honest opinion.

Could be right. But why don't you post the numbers to back your claim instead of betting on something out of your dislike for the other coach?

I like Gus Malzahn. I think you made a very good point in your previous post regarding their OC skills. Gus may be somewhat better. It's close. IMO, it's with other intangibles and things one can't necessarily measure with numbers like being able to skillfully build team chemistry, etc.

Well, the OP was who was the better OC... To date that's not even a question. As HC, it's certainly up for debate. Numbers aren't the be all end all.

Malzahn is coaching the better program... Will help in the long run.

Fair enough. I'm just stating my opinion and time will tell. But I'm not gonna agree that Auburn's the better program and I don't care how many facts and numbers you have. I've been an Ole Miss fan, second to Arkansas for almost my entire life so I can't be objective, and don't care to be objective in that regard.

I think i see what you mean, the eyeball test right? I haven't watched freeze near as much as Gus. I've seen Gus give an AU team that won 3 games last season (and quit on the field in most) a renewed chemistry and desire to be better. Of course it's his first year, they aren't great by any means. Even with that being said, I really wouldn't say who I thought was the better Head coach yet. It's way to early.

Not a direct question at you.
Kinda off subject but I've been wondering this... Why in 2010 did SO MANY people tell AU fans they'd be better off firing Chizik and replacing him with Gus only to turn around and knock Gus when AU did just that?

What is the argument for Freeze being close to Gus as an offensive coach?

Because initially, they really meant it but didn't think AU would actually do it, or that Chizik would self-destruct so soon. And when AU did hire Gus, they talked themselves into resenting even suggesting it in the first place. From a psychological perspective, maybe it's a paradoxical form of cognitive dissonance. Maybe they're just crazy. With HawgAlude, it's both, combined with the fact that he resented Arkansas not hiring Gus. Personally, I liked Gus but wasn't a bus riding disciple. I'm just glad y'all didn't hire Petrino.

Don't get me started. That's was who I wanted but TBH, I think AU made a good decision with Gus. I'm gonna wait and see how the program looks in 2 years before I say we made the better choice. I remember not wanting Freeze at all though.
