Well it's supposed to be one of his more 'humorous' novels. From my perspective though, I'm really interested in hearing about the economic disaster that was Knoxville during that time - I had no idea it was so bad but apparently everything closed at once the textile mills, and all the other industry. Knoxville was covered in coal ash and seemed doomed in every way. To realize the city came from all that and hear about it from a first-hand account is pretty exciting. So there's kinda an automatic uplift in that the city made it through these hard times and those times would be unrecognizable to us today.
