That was a really good movie (Breach). Pretty cool that the main character was an Auburn grad.
Alabama has a grad portrayed in a similar CIA related movie in Charlie Wilson's War.

Brad Pitt actually hung out in Maynardville preparing for his role in "Inglorious Basterds." Tarantino references E. TN because he's from Knoxville. We also have a lot of stars who regularly visit the area. They know they can stay and/or visit here without anyone harassing them. Harrison Ford, for example, is known to visit a certain lake. There's also a fairly famous director living in KnoxVegas and others.
Central location, great scenery and people who won't bug you and often won't recognize you because they're not looking for stars makes it a great location.
Another in the entertainment industry (comics/movies):
The guy who wrote Men in Black is from Knoxville.

Have you read Suttree? It's all about Knoxville when Cormac was growing up.
Per wiki:
quote:
Set in 1951 in Knoxville, Tennessee, the novel follows Cornelius Suttree, who has repudiated his former life of privilege to become a fisherman on the Tennessee River. The novel has a fragmented structure with many flashbacks and shifts in grammatical person. Suttree has been compared [1] to James Joyce's Ulysses, John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, and called [2] "a doomed version" of Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Suttree was written over a 20-year span [3] and is a departure from McCarthy's previous novels, being much longer, more sprawling in structure, and perhaps McCarthy's most humorous novel.

It's on my to-read list.

Crap. I forgot to mention James Agee who wrote "A Death in the Family," another Pulitzer winner from Knoxville.

Certainly impressive. One of the few charities that has my full support and absolute respect (I'm skeptical of a lot of them).

Wait, Prof--didn't Vonnegut go to Cornell? I just assumed he was there for his entire college career, given that he was the pledge educator in a buddy's frat.

Kenny Chesney - born in Knoxville, raised in Luttrell/Maynardville and went to HS in Knoxville. Not a big fan of his music but he is kind of a big deal.
