How about Alex Haley

We are like Rome - all roads lead to Knoxville. Not sure if Haley was born in Knoxville or not but he certainly claimed us in life and we claimed him. The Alex Haley statue is awesome (I think they built a park too). Also, UT has all of his personal papers. I think that's more than enough to count him.

Their names are similar enough that I could see you mixing them up. Unless you thought they looked alike I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Wait, Prof--didn't Vonnegut go to Cornell? I just assumed he was there for his entire college career, given that he was the pledge educator in a buddy's frat.

He did initially go to Cornell but was transferred to UT to study mechanical engineering.

REM and the B-52's were the most commercially successful bands out of Athens. B-52's are my favorite of the two and they started in the 70's. I've never been into jam bands even when they were in. I remember them being very popular with the college scene in the 90's, mainly in deep south though. I do realize that WSP had a big following.

^REM was also highly influential in the music world. That counts for a lot.

Yes we have our Edam cheese. You can't get any during the holiday season, unless you order in Oct.

Well, I know he wasn't born in Baton Rouge, but Bill Conti apparently came up with a rough draft of the Rocky theme for a class project while studying music at LSU. He was in the Golden Band from Tigerland as well and credits LSU a lot for his musical chops. He did the scores for all but one of the Rocky movies.

I saw a video saying two other people turned down the movie because it didn't really pay anything. He took it and it was so low budget that he had his wife and her co-workers that could sing do the vocals on "Gonna Fly Now" - the main theme. The rest is history.

And he married a Golden Girl...Ding-Ding.

Rocky music > the rest

Prof,

I've read Suttree and trust me, you won't be disappointed. It's in my top 5 favorite novels of all time.

Yes it is an investment of time, but the prose is so complex and elegant that you can't help but love the book. So many characters involved and the landscape Cormac paints is something I think any Vol will identify with.
