I feel like ttown is a little underrated on this list. We get really good folk playing at the bars almost every couple days, they just might not be very well known.

I don't know how local or if you can find any of there stuff online, but cbdb is an awesome band that plays the bars a lot.

Eta: that also doesn't include the amphitheater which gets big time names plus the fraternity houses who usually get three or more biggish names school year.

Oxford at number 3? I don't know about that one. I'd say BR and Fayetteville could compete for number 3 but Oxford is not even top 5.

This. Can an Ole Miss person post about Ole Miss or Oxford without making huge exaggerations? Is it possible?

And stop with the comparisons to Athens. Oxford is not even in the same ballpark as Athens. In anything.

I've been to Oxford many times and have not randomly seen a decent band playing. I don't care who "recorded" in the city. You could show up in Baton Rouge any night of the week and find good music.

The population of Oxford is around 20,000. The Tuscaloosa music scene destroys Oxford as well. Your city is just not big enough to claim that it is better than Baton Rouge..period.

I just posted that because over the past few years, I've probably seen that story about "Modest Mouse played x-bar in Oxford" set forth as proof of a "great music scene" about a dozen times.

Here's a hint. If you have to keep going back to talk about "that one time that one band played that one bar", you don't have a "great music scene".

That would be like me posting about when the White Stripes played JRs in Fayetteville or when Green Day did the same thing under an secret band name. Those aren't proof of anything except that those bands played in tiny bars in Fayetteville. That's cool.

A great music scene means you have those acts coming through before they're famous, on the reg, and its just a part of the scene. A great music scene means you have dozens and dozens of homegrown bands, and several venues where these bands are playing week in and week out.

It also means you can have big regional and national acts come through town without it being the event of the year.

Fayetteville has a lot more of that going on than Oxford. I would suspect a few other SEC towns do as well.

1. Nashville/Vandy - This is comparing apples to oranges, but clearly Nashville has the best music scene in the SEC. Next to Austin, it may be the best city to see music in America.

austin isn't even in the top 10. nashvlle, new york and LA are the top 3 music cities in the country (not in that order) and it isn't even close. of course texans put austin up there but they put everything texas ahead of others whether deserving or not. in the sec, louisiana and georgia are the two centers of music after nashville and are light years ahead of any other location in the sec. my definition of the "music scene" encompasses artists first (vocalists and instrumentalists) but also writers, producers, promoters, recording professionals and performing venues. nashville is sick; you need 50 saxophone players (or any instrument) one phone call will have them in hours. the new orleans "sound" is it's own genre'. yea, katrina dispersed a lot of musicians but they are back (most, anyway). austin is filled with nashville rejects and the bands that cater to the university's students.

You're old, and an LSU fan, but I agree with most of what you said.

Austin has a ton of live music, but it hasn't produced much of national relevance in many years--particularly for the volume of musicians there. Lots and lots of trash and noise. I love Austin, but I agree with your assessment of their music scene on a national level.

Even for a "college music scene", Athens, which is many times smaller, has produced a lot more lasting and better music.

Well, if you're gonna go this route. There are plenty of great artists from Gainesville, some legendary. The music scene back in the 90's was ok.

Not as widely known...but back in the day, Knoxville produced some awesome bands, including: The V-Roys, Superdrag, The Everybodyfields, The Judybats and Smokin Dave and the Premo Dopes. Many were not heard of beyond college radio stations in the '80s & 90's...but they put out some awesome music.

You also have Flatt & Scruggs, The Everly Brothers, Roy Acuff and Homer and Jethro that got their start in Knoxville.

Knoxville isn't first on the list (by a longshot)but certainly in the top 10.

Is Nashville #1 for making mass-produced pop country with very basic lyrics?

I think you need to consider the actual town the university is in and not "oh well this place is 1 hour away so we win."

Truth. If this were the case then College Station should be higher on the list as it is less than 2 hours away from Austin, which IS the Live Music Capitol of the World. Go downtown on a weekday night, and you'll find a live band playing at every other bar/club. We have big acts playing big shows at the Drum every other week it seems. ACL and SXSW are two highly revered music festivals in the country (ACL has lost some credit though in recent years), with bands who will come anyway, even if they don't get a slot. I've heard SXSW rejects playing on the Lamar pedestrian bridge or in the bathroom of a restaurant/bar. Musicians see Austin as a place to be seen, but not necessarily signed. That's the misconception. So before anyone dismisses Austin as a music scene, you best define what you mean first.

If we include music within one hour of the college town, you're still probably ranked the same.

A whole lotta blues history within one hour of Oxford.

Really, a lot of great bands on the Texas/Red Dirt scene come through College Station at Hurricane Harry's... people are too busy trying to get drunk and have sex to notice it though.

Turnpike Troubadours, Pat Green, Stoney LaRue, Casey Donahew Band, Randy Rogers Band, Wade Bowen, and several others come through on a regular basis.

College Station should be #4 on this list.
