Anyone who doesn't know that Chet Atkins came from Knoxville, doesn't really know music.

This thread is stupid, but Nashville is the obvious answer at number one.

I'd agree that Athens and Oxford are 2 and 3. Just think of all the artists who have recorded records in those towns. Athens has Widespread Panic, REM, the B-52s. Oxford has the North Mississippi All Stars, RL Burnside, The Black Keyes, Elvis Costello, Modest Mouse...

The Lyric theater in Oxford was recently listed as one of the best music venues in the country. They always have great shows.

I think we all know State should be at the bottom cause all they have are 3 string banjos and empty wine bottles. thats what those hick fans call music

Fayetteville isn't the best. Nashville and Athens can battle it out for that. Fayetteville is as good as the rest though.

Modest Mouse...

Maybe recorded something there, but are you really claiming a band from the Washington/Oregon area?

Well, if you're gonna go this route. There are plenty of great artists from Gainesville, some legendary. The music scene back in the 90's was ok.

Tom Petty
Stephen Stills
Bo Diddley

actually until recently, Starkville had better live music scene than Baton Rouge as far as college music is concerned. Now it's still probably arguable too. I know when I was there, it was better b/c The Varsity in BR was getting shitty local bands to play there or have disco nights. Meanwhile, Starkville would get bands that were touring either before or after oxford and tuscaloosa stops. Starkville just needs a better venue b/c Rick's sucks. But the darkhorse always had good local flavor and MSU always did pretty good getting bands to come as did Mulligan's. Baton Rouge suffers b/c they would rather play N.O. than baton rouge.

I had this talk with a friend the other day.

The bulk of the major acts that play the Varsity- BR are from either Austin or Nashville, each of which are within an 8 hour drive from Baton Rouge.

BR deserves to be in the Top 5 of this list.

I think you need to consider the actual town the university is in and not "oh well this place is 1 hour away so we win."

I said "recorded" in my post. I wasn't claiming they were from Oxford.

I was just pointing out that a lot of really famous bands and musicians have recorded albums in Oxford. While there, they would put on local shows as if they were any other band in town. The lead singer of Modest Mouse used to play guitar and sing at Proud Larry's by himself sometimes.

Lexington, Kentucky?

Lexington has always had a musical base and varies through all types of music. Joyland Park was a well known destination in the early days of Rock and Roll. While not on the level of Nashville or New Orleans it should probably be in the Top 25% than the bottom 75%.

Hater! but on a serious note. BR by a long shot because we get everything from the Deftones to Willie Nelson. We get country acts, rock, rap and all types of jam bands. Keep in mind they are not worried about having bands that people who graduated 15-20 years ago will enjoy, sometimes during the season but not always for sure.

That's a bit harsh. They are a solid band that had some good hits in the 90's. People are just proud to have some LSU alums make it.

While I can't really compare the music scene, there are some good bands that filter through. I saw Ryan Bingham several years ago at Chelsea's. The varsity also gets a lot of up and coming artists. LSU has pulled in some good acts for their Groovin on The Grounds outdoor concert. Also the River Center pulls in plenty of big names on tour.

Sogo live used to bring in a lot of the Nola brass bands, but they eventually closed.

Unfortunately, BR has been dominated by the cover band circuit. It always seems like Bag of Donuts, the Molly Ringwalds, or the Cheewees are always playing somewhere in town.

Can't argue with this at all. Most people don't know how good of a music scene Fayetteville has, or Columbia for that matter. I honestly think Oxford may be a tad bit overrated, but I think if I put Fayetteville above it bias would be the culprit rather than evidence.

The gap between 2 and 3 is huge.
