Ask the question this way: If you needed a coach and had to hire an SEC Coach not named Saban, who do you hire?

I know State is a tough place to draw recruits, but he loses players who start the recruiting cycle saying that they want to go to MSU. They're advertising that Dan can get them if he just shows some love. Nope, there's just as good a chance that they end up at an out of state school

When a better offer comes in, MSU will lose out most of the time. Recruiting is not as important as development for programs like MSU. Mullen does a good job with that issue.

I do think people forget just what an all time stinker job MSU has been.

State's all time SEC win %, excluding Mullen, is 32.9%

Mullens SEC win % is 45.3%

I still think Freeze is the best on field coach in the SEC. Too bad he took shortcuts to try to get Ole Miss in the upper half of the league.

And everyone on that list outside of Saban and Mullen, maybe O, Smart and Muschamp because they are brand new, would be fired if they go 4-8 or 5-7 next year

No doubt. Overall, I think Mullen's classes have been very respectable. But he seems to miss on the guys who need a little extra effort. To be fair he does get some, like SA#39 and Jeffrey Simmons.

My only concern is that Dan is nearing that 10 year mark where it's about time to move on. I'll honestly wish him well and pull for his teams

Is that some type of revelation ? Do you not think there would be cries that Saban has lost it if he goes 5-7 next year ?

He's also 11-13 in the SEC the past three years but 18-14 overall as HC at Auburn.

Compare that with 2012 hires Jones (14-18 overall) - 12-12 past three, Bielema (10-22 overall) - 10-14 past three and Stoops (8-24 overall) - 8-16 past three years none are impressive.

I don't think he is bad but I really don't see this at all. I can think of a few games in which he made very questionable calls and can argue it cost them the game.

I could agree more if you were talking about creating a game plan leading into the game but not in game coaching.

Yes, it is. It points to the fact that there are 2 stable coaching situations in the league. The rest are either in a honeymoon phase or a 7-5 season away from being fired.

Probably Kirby. He recruits well and I think he will have success at Georgia.

That is a different question completely. You would need to take relative age into account among other considerations.

I would probably pick Coach O for A&M, as long as his contract was reasonable. I wouldn't expect him to actually win anything at A&M while he was there, but he would stock the roster for whoever follows him in the (hopefully) post-Saban SEC era.
