The most common way to make the distinction is if a coach worked as an assistant on a particular head coach's staff for at least a season then that coach can be counted as being a branch on the head coach's coaching tree.Coaching trees can also show philosophical influence from one head coach to an assistant.
And Dantonio credits Saban with a lot. He's known Saban since Nick recruited him out of high school for Kent State.
Like how Saban credits Belicheck, despite having his first coordinator job with George Perles.

Since the standard is "has to have coached with Saban at some time regardless of tenure, position, or any other lineage as a coach," I guess it is Dan Quinn.

That's like saying someone was like a father to you. It doesn't actually make them your father, though.

Can he really be considered a part of his tree?
Give me your criteria for being considered on ones coaching tree?
So any coach that ever coached under Saban is part of his tree? I think that being part of a coaching tree means that it should go to the coach that discovered him or the coach that he was working for when he landed his head coaching job.
Dantonio was first hired by Jim Tressel and then was working for him again when he became a head coach at Cincinnati. Jim Tressel's coaching tree, not Saban's tree.
Jimbo Fisher was first hired by Terry Bowden and replaced Bobby Bowden as head coach. Part of the Bowden coaching tree, not Saban's tree.

Or they impacted and influenced how they coached and adapted their style going forward.
Sorry you don't agree with the definition

You're sorry that people disagree with an unverified statement in a wikipedia article?

No, I'm sorry you think your definition should be held above the general stance on "coaching trees".
I'm also sorry you're stuck in 2010 still talking shite about the validity of everything sourced from a Wikipedia article.
Keep fighting the good fight though...

I'm happy to know that Jason Garrett and Dan Quinn are on the Saban coaching tree. Given they both have obtained jobs at the highest level, they are clearly the most successful coaches on his tree.
Would you say that Mike Zimmer or Hue Jackson is the greatest branch on the Bobby Petrino coaching tree?

Just like Saban is part of a number of HC's coaching trees. This isn't as hard as you are trying to make it out to be.

Don't understand how coaching trees work.

Not Jimbo?
Jimbo is more from the Terry Bowden. He coached for Terry longer than he coached for saban.

Saban has been working solo. Pay attention.

I would say the only coaches that are for sure on the Saban coaching tree are Smart, Muschamp, and Dooley.

Dantonio coached DBs at MSU for 5 years under Saban. For those that don't know, the secondary is Saban's specialty. It's where he played, position coached, and where he personally helps out in practice.
So Saban would have spent the most time with Dantonio over those 5 years than any of his other position coaches.

Dantonio is a very good coach. If he had the same recruiting base and resources as Saban he could probably win a couple of national titles.

It's not exactly a tree yet...more like a bush.

How is Jimbo from the Saban tree? He didn't start his career with Sabear and was only with him at LSU for 4 seasons.
