McCarron is a known while the oline is still an unknown. You could give Tom Brady no protection and he probably wouldn't do that much better. When he had protection, he seemed to do well, and when he didn't, he wasn't as effective. The problem wasn't with AJ.

ETA: there were a few drops too which didn't help.

And maybe he will. But by comparison, how confident will you be in your qb when put under the same pressure in his own house. Since we already know he can't take a little trash talking.

It looks like he may have to put more on his shoulders this year and watching his performance against VT certainly wasn't impressive.

Its not like he was awful. He still made some great throws, some that were dropped. He'll be fine.

Will the receivers still be fine though?
A good case of the drops tends to linger.

I did. Sans one drive where Barrett Jones made a call for a screen, and the running back made a play, AJ was terrible. Barrett Jones ain't there any more, and given how terrible the offensive line is, a 35 yard screen play ain't happening any time soon.

There have been conflicting reports on who really called the screen. Barrett, AJ, and Nuss have all been said at some point or another to have made the call.

I am much more concerned about AJ throwing hissy fits at young players. This could be a repeat of McElroys last year if he does not humble down. He needs to lead not present himself as Coach lite.

What? That's what the leader should do. If Henry gets his feelings hurt over the big bad QB telling him to do it right, then he doesn't need to play. If you're allowed to be on the same field as McCarron, you're expected to do it right. If you don't, you'll be playing with Blake Sims.

I hope so. A couple of the drops came from Cooper, and one from true freshman. Those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Cooper is already proven to be an All SEC WR, so I am not going to lose confidence in his hands after a couple of drops. One of AJs incompletions was a touchdown caught by Cooper that was ruled out of bounds and our coaches never threw the red flag.

A&M had 3 negative yardage plays out of 66 last Saturday, I'm not worried about our OL. Even so, Johnny is a tad more mobile than AJ considering he rushed for 1400 more yards than AJ last year.

Is the lack of OL protection going to make him into a far less effective QB or is this a 1 game thing?

Ask me in 6 weeks. Clearly nobody here knows a damn thing yet.

I can think of no better therapy for an offensive player's bruised psyche than to play aTm.

Returned 9 starters from a defense that was sixth in the country in TFL last year.

Depends. If I had an offensive lineman I'd show him film of the Bama/Virginia Tech game to see how laughably bad other teams can be. If I was a skill player, I think I'd juat put him on A&M. If you want to catch a TD all you have to do is be on the same field as Johnny for a series or two and it's bound to happen.

Sounds like you might be shocked when AJ throws more TD passes on Sept 14 than Manziel does. I won't be.

with the style bama has developed under saban, it is extremely important to have have superior OL play... the play action passing game and deep routes are based on a successful running game... and often times, teams are stacking the box to stop it. Their great OL play has helped otherwise average QBs (JPW and McElroy) turn into very successful college players.

The real lone hiccup (if you can call a 10 win season a hiccup) was 2010 season when injuries along the OL caused a couple slip-ups... that team, man for man, was one of the most talented teams in college history.

bottom line is I wouldn't be concerned with McCarron at all... he'll keep doing what he's been doing for two years.... it'll come down to the OL's development in the coming weeks. If they continue to struggle, a loss or two is inevitable, IMO.
