Dothan Country Club has been outgrown by modern technology but I have very fond memories of that course.
i want to say that it at one point was just RTJ they played
or maybe it was both...then it was just RJT when they were working on DOthan country club
This had to be in the early part of the decade..2003ish

I spent alot of time in Dothan while at Fort Rucker. The city is changing and growing. The 231 corridor headed north out of the city in particular. As far as quality of life is concerned, I was an Army LT and CPT while there and that salary (sub 60k)could live quite comfortably there. The bypass (if you want to call it that) around the city is known as the Ross Clark Circle and you will quickly learn to hate it. The RTJ course is very nice.
Its about 1 1/2 hours from Panama City, 2 hours from Tallahassee FL, and about 3 hours from Birmingham. The area is called the Wiregrass region, some people even call it UCLA - for the ugly corner of lower Alabama.
They have a peanut festival every November that is absolutely huge.
If you are from NC, its probably a smaller Fayetteville type of city as far as population.
If the restaurant is still open, you must try Conestoga steak house. Its a local favorite and is pretty damn good.
If you are familiar with the ATPB thread on here, the good Mr. Gilley has done alot in that area. Country Crossings is just down the road. I have no idea what the status of that place is now. There are plans in the works to turn that area into a mini Branson, Mo. BamaJam country music festival is up the road in Enterprise and believe it or not, is a pretty big deal.
I wonder if the Dothan COC would be pleased with my efforts here?

My parents grew up there and as many said, it is a typical small/mid-sized southern town.
I would think you would find it fine if you are married and especially if you have children.
As someone said, Montgomery is 100 miles away and Tallahassee, FL is about the same distance.
It is by no means a major metro area, but you could do worse and as shaky as the job market is, if it is a good opportunity, I would give it a look.

I just moved to Dothan about 8 months ago, golf courses pretty good, not much to do other than golf within the city. It is just very deep south country. I would welcome any tiger fan into these parts.

I have lived in Dothan before.
1. About 1.5 - 2hrs to the Panama City Beach area
2. Golfing is probably the best thing about the city if that is what you are into. For a city of its size the golfing is great. The Highlands is a very nice course and has hosted several major tournaments. Also many other courses if you are on a budget.
3. Population is about 65,000 or so in city, 100,000 in the county, 200,000 in the metro area/counties surrounding it. It is essentially the hub city of SE AL, NW Florida, and SW Georgia. If you want to go shopping, etc in that area, you go to Dothan.
4. Quality of life depends on your age. If you are young and single, you will probably hate it. There is not much to do or join for that age group if you are educated. If you are more into outdoors like fishing and hunting it is great for that. If you are married and have kids or are planning on it, it is an excellent city. Safe neighborhoods in most any price range and first class municipal baseball/football/soccer facilities for the kids to get involved with.
As you can imagine with any moderately sized town in the deep south that is not a college town, you are talking very conservative politically and socially. Mostly Southern Baptist and that will take getting used to if you are a Louisiana Catholic. The culture is different. There is only one Catholic church in the entire region (although it is nice and fairly large).
It is about 50/50 AU and Alabama fans with a few UGA, FSU and Florida fans scattered. I can almost promise you there will be no LSU alumni association.

Like anything else,you're gonna get different opinions.I live in Dothan,and have been since 1998.I love it.Why? As some mentioned,you can be on the beach in about 90 minutes in panama city,or,destin in 2 hours or so.Poplulation is about 68,000.There is a mall,but the biggest thing if you like to eat out,per capita,they have more restaurants than any other city.You can hop on the bypass and be where you need to be in minutes most of the time.Yes,montgomery is the next biggest city,but I lived there as a kid,and the crime rate is much worse.They have 2 major hospitals,tons of specialist,doctors,you name it. If you have any questions about anything,lemme know.Also,you're only minutes from the Georgia state line,as well as florida state line

I'm from Texas. Have to qualify that before I say in the early 90's we hit La Vela et al during the summer. I have never seen/met more hots from one town than I did from Dothan. Not sure why Dothan was packed with them nor do I care... Be "redneck" all you like ladies...

The whole town smells like fried food and everything in town shuts down at like 8pm. There are some nicer homes outside of town around the golf course, but as far as overall nice areas, it is lacking. Has pretty much every chain restaurant you can think of but only has a decent local steak place and a halfway decent seafood/oyster place. There's a few milfs working for the hospital, but the women in the town are nothing to be excited about.

Forgot about the hospitals, SE Alabama Medical Center and Flowers Hospital are absolutely first rate.
Lots of Army helicopters flying around too.

I played in it from 1988 to 1991. I do remember a guy from Lafayette, LA who played in it and I think some AJGA tournaments, Kris Cox. I think he currently plays on the Nationwide Tour.
I have the programs from each year I played. It's neat looking back at the old programs. To put the time period I played in it in perspective, Ben Curtis won the 10 and under age group one of the years I played in it.
