This got me to thinking. HC that get fired and move down to coordinator has happened before. Does anybody know of which ones have been successful and which have not after moving down?

Muschamp was only back with us for a single year in 2015, but he fixed the defensive culture slump we'd had since Tuberville got canned and he raided Florida of enough recruits to keep us elite on defense 2016-19. It's not a coincidence that our D took a giant step back this year after that class graduated.

Conversely, it's kinda hard to evaluate Chad Morris given the dysfunction in the program that he stepped into on top of not having spring ball to actually install his offense.

That was a terrible hire. Got rid of Steele and hired Mason? Oh well, prolly be good for Bama & other teams the Boogs have to play.

Auburn had to make a clean break from Gus in my opinion but if we keep Twill and Caddy I'm good with them staying.

He did well at Stanford and Vandy outside of this year, those are tough spots to be successful with the academic standards. Have to find kids who can get in, stay in, and play football. With access to elite football players who knows what he can do? Now if we get him we have to get more of the elite players to find out

This is looking more and more like a total disaster for Auburn.

Mason is used to coaching smart kids. It's gonna be a huge adjustment for him at auburn.

The barners are seldom worth the praise much less trying to have the stomach for it. BUT.

Kevin Steele, with talent in place, does the best job in the SEC defending HUNH RPO spread teams. We have SEC DCs who can get in front of conventional offenses but lose their mind and defensive principles at the speed of light against hybrid offenses. I can only assume that when the dust settled from almost being the head man Kevin didn't want to play second fiddle any longer. Otherwise, Mason struggles like the rest of the SEC against elite offenses.

Probably a good hire. Vandy was pretty scrappy on defense.

Steele’s press man has cost AU more games than Gus inept Offense. Last year he got credit because he kept LSU to season lows and played UF close. Truth is LSU had over 500 yards of Offense and Trask was starting his first game. AU had two NFL players on the DL and some other future NFL talent. The last 3 years against Bama , he has given up over 1000 yards through the air.Steele was turning into his old Clemson self.

You lost your defensive personnel and push from last season. He had his guys up to speed remarkably fast this season in spite of it. You take the dynamic offenses of a Nick Marshall era and the barn is pushing for the playoff. The Bo Nix era, and then some, clearly showed that Gus lost his fastball, not his defense.

What I will never understand is why Gus didn't run the read option with Nix similar to what he did with Marshall. Marshall was probably the best fit for that offense that year

I don't know, you damn sure couldn't stop it. The argument has always been the SEC caught up with Gus's offense. They caught up with his changing personnel, not his principles. He is the one that talked himself out of what was working. At least I know Bama never took it away and can't recall anyone else doing it.
