Thoughts on these rankings:
1. Nick Saban, Alabama - Without a doubt given the usual way coaches are ranked but I'd love to see someone do a ranking that controls for talent level and ranks coaches taking that into account. It would be interesting to see not only where Saban falls but also where everyone else does. Very few coaches have benefited from the kind of mega-recruiting/mega-rosters Saban has benefited from and talent that far ahead of everyone else not only matters but matters a LOT. Some math whiz would probably have to do any ranking like that tho.
2. Steve Spurrier, South Carolina - I actually think he's a better XO's and player development coach than Saban is despite the W-Ls/Championships measure. Spurrier is a program builder and if UF wasn't convincing enough to show it USC is.
3. Gus Malzahn, Auburn - Fair enough given what we've seen of him but I also think time will tell us better where he ultimately falls. He could go up in rank or down. Because he's new though I'd put him behind Miles and Richt with an asterick that an argument can be made for #3.
4. Mark Richt, Georgia - If we're going on overall record then maybe but with the talent UGA consistently has I think he should be behind Miles.
5. Les Miles, LSU - I think he should be ~3 or 4.
6. Gary Pinkel, Missouri - I'm not really sure where to place Pinkel but this isn't far fetched based on his overall coaching record and his ability to take 'meh' to 'lower tier talent' and turn them into great players. Probably #1 coach in the SEC in terms of talent/player development and getting the most out of his teams.
7. Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M - I think Sumlin is great coach and this is probably about right but it will be interesting to see where he goes without JFF. He's recruiting exceptionally well so while I think 2014 will be a bit of down year for A&M the future is bright. Time will tell though.
8. Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss - Probably about right but I just don't know enough about Freeze and OM to say.
9. Dan Mullen, Mississippi State - Same as Freeze.
10. Butch Jones, Tennessee - Probably about right given the factors the author uses and that UT's roster made the phrase 'empty cupboard' look inadequate to describe just how bad the roster holes were. Also, 'dumpster fire' doesn't begin to describe what he inherited from Dooley. I think he has potential to go up and it will be interesting to see if that happens.
11. Will Muschamp, Florida - Given that he can't find an offense with all the talent UF has and trying several OC's this is probably correct. I just can't fathom why that side of the ball has been so lacking during his tenure and feel despite the incredible D's he's put together he's not a complete HC yet (maybe the new OC will finally put it together). I can see arguing he should be ahead of Jones and wouldn't have any issue with that but it does seem that Muschamp has been trending down despite starting off well enough in terms in Ws-Ls.
12. Brett Bielema, Arkansas - He was successful once upon a time so probably about right despite his first year.
13. Mark Stoops, Kentucky - Hard to say until he has time build something at UK. I'm impressed with his recruiting inroads and think he has potential. In the right spot for the time being.
14. Derek Mason, Vanderbilt - Absolutely. We just don't have any info to guess how good or bad of an HC he might be.

Can you name me a single team in the BCS era that didn't win a national championship with NFL-caliber talent scattered around?
You win with talent. There are very few teams in the major conferences who win consistently without it.

2010 Auburn...we had a lot of seniors, a lot of freshmen, a 2 BEAST...but not a lot of NFL talent

Can I get a list of the NFL players from that team?

Of course not but that's not really the point. I'm not knocking Saban but rather I'd love to see where he and everyone else falls controlling for that element. And let's be honest for moment, the talent level Saban has been able to consistently bring in is simply beyond the norm. It's at that high of a level and so for him in particular it's harder to see where he falls *if* that mega-talent were controlled for. And FWIW, a #1 class under Saban isn't remotely in the same league as a #1 class pre-Saban at Bama. It's not that he gets enough to pull a #1 class but that he gets wayyyyyy beyond what we've ever seen before, grabbing up every 5 star in site while those recruits used to be more spread out among teams than they are now.

I would keep 1-2 the same, move Les to 3, and slide Gus down to 4. After that, I don't care.

Your QB was the first pick in the NFL Draft, and you likewise had a DT who went in the first round.
You also have Neiko Thorpe, AJ Greene, Ben Tate, Ontario McCaleb, Josh Harris, Cory Lemonier, as well as a few others in the NFL.
That team had NFL-caliber talent.

Neiko Thorpe and Onterio McCalebb are on practice squads. Ben Tate wasn't in the team in 2010. AJ Greene fricking sucked and is not in the NFL in any capacity to my knowledge.

But that's not a variable you can just get rid of considering Saban has been bringing in top talent practically his entire career. Recruiting is a big part of college football. As the former President of The University of Alabama once said to Coach Frank Thomas, football is 90% material and 10% coaching.

The above poster has the correct list.
I never said they had to be superstars in the league. If they're in the NFL in any capacity they are obviously NFL-caliber.
